Over the weekend my mind went back to when I started playing golf at Springhead, where my father was a member. One of his drinking pals, was a certain Charlie Flood who used to frequent the bar at Springhead most weekends. Some of you might know that he played for City in the twenties, but played most game for Nottingham Forest. Born in Newport Isle of Wight, interestingly even though he played for a few teams around the country, finishing his playing career at Swindon, he came and settled back in the Hull area. I met him a few times, really nice guy. He had the habit of taking a cigarette out of my uncles silver cigarette case, who used to put it on the bar whilst having a pint with my Dad, saying you don't mind if I take one of your wonderful cigarettes Stanley do you, with a big grin on his face. One Saturday night my Dad and Uncle came in for their evening pint, and Charlie was in the corner of the bar. My uncle as usual put his cigarette case on the bar, and Charlie as usual pick up the case say his usual with a big smile on his face. He started to try and open it and could manage, only to find my uncle had soldered the lid down so he could open it. Well, the whole place was in up roar, but he also saw the funny side and never did it again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Flood
The opposing team players look like Peter Bonneti, 'Chopper (Ron) Harris and Charlie Cook of Chelsea but I haven't a clue as about the date or anything and the only city player I recognise, is the guy behind the elbow, Billy Whitehurst or Alf Woods, but the match itself baffles me as the main Chelsea match I remember is in the Waggy Chilton era, and with so many empty spaces in the background the photo has me beat.
I think you're right ref - it looks like Chelsea, and I suspect it was the 76/77 season as the small player behind their # 5's elbow looks like Billy Bremner. John Kaye was our manager that year, we finished 14th and Chelsea were promoted as runners up. Following year we were relegated to Division 3 (we were in last place at the end of the season). In the relegation year ('77-78) Kaye was sacked early on after a poor start, to be replaced by Bobby Collins (ex-Leeds). Bremner wanted to be manager but his application was denied in favour of Collins. After relegation, Ken Houghton was promoted from youth team coach to manager of the 1st team. We drew with Chelea at home 1-1 and lost 4-0 to them away that season (76/77). If that's the home game the empty stand must be the East stand, although I don't really recognize it ?
It is Alf Wood Wood and Dave Sunley...Sunley...as the song went. Looks like Chelsea away but I don't think it is 76/77 For a start it's dark and we played them away towards the end of the season on a Saturday afternoon in May with over 43,000 there. If it is Chelsea it could be 75/76 as City Man says, February, 0-0.
City team for the 75/76 away fixture against Chelsea feb 76. 0-0. We lost 2-1 at home. Wealands, Daniels, DeVries, Galvin, Croft, Roberts, Grimes, Lyall, Wood, Fletcher, Staniforth (Sunley) I don't remember a Fletcher. Maybe it's him?
Peter 'Stretch' Fletcher ? Part of the deal that took Stuart Pearson to Manchester United on May 3rd 1974, £200k plus him.
Don't remember him at all. This was the team for the home game. I don't remember Gibson, remember all the others. Spent many an hour practicing the Galvin shuffle Wealands, Banks, DeVries, Galvin, Croft, Haigh, Grimes, Gibson, Stewart, Wagstaff, Greenwood
