Roger DeVries lived down Murrayfield Road off Chants Ave. I used to deliver his newspapers. Ken Houghton bought the sweetshop at the top of Murrayfield Rd too.
I recall the headlines in the Sports Mail when he scored 2 goals in his debut at B.P. after signing from Sheff Wed. "This Roy's a real Shiner !!". He was 35 when we signed him and only played for us for 1 season. The excellent Jackie Sewell played at City that season too. We were in the habit of signing older players at the end of their careers in the mid to late 50's.
Funny you should mention it John. I was editing my post at the same time you were typing your response about Sewell
At the Anlaby Road end of Albert Avenue there are a couple, maybe more, of beautiful old three storey houses. I used to pick a patient up from one of them and inside many of the original Victorian features remain, although a bit worn. I was told a famous sea captain used to live there. Not Captain Birdseye either. In one of the houses the top floor was decked out with every Hornby train set and track imaginable, the walls were racked out top to bottom with dinky ( matchbox ?) cars, toys and from the ceiling every humbrol airfix model ever made hung from wires and some in battle formation. That collection must have been worth more than the house.
Ron Shiner scored 9 goals that one season which ended in relegation along with Plymouth who came up with us. From memory.
If memory serves me right Paul Feasey, Brian Bulless and Eric McMillan all lived in the Eastfield Rd area at one time.
Plymouth pipped us by one point for 1st place in '58-'59 ( we had a better "goal average",) but it was Bristol City (bottom place)who dropped down with us the following season. Plymouth stayed up, 2 places & 5 points above us.
Frankie Banks lived in the house south side of the small car park down North road were the away team bus would park . I thought Ian McKechnie lived down Westfield road though . Just shows how the life of a footballer has changed over the years .
Great goal scoring record 274 league appearances - 251 goals, also great manager should have managed England, but for the F.A. being too worried about him being too outspoken for them, they seemed to prefer a more of a yes man type of manager at the time.
Does anyone have any photos or articles about the Hull City action group in the late seventies, early eighties, who marched with a coffin to boothferry park.
