There’s been no announcement yet afaik but given Paratici did the deal sending Romero to Atalanta in the first place, I assume he knows the Ts & Cs

I can't see it working. Just can't. Not with all 3's starting position being level with eachother. Playing Ndombele on the left is a recipe for us to get murdered down that flank as Reguilon likes to get forward and isn't amazing defensively. And there is no way in heaven or hell Tanguy is going to put a shift in to get back and cover and/or have the positional discipline to compensate as and when Reg goes on the overlap.

It'd be exactly the same problem if we played Tanguy on the right flank unless we don't intend to play Doherty to his strengths and sign a Davies type RB whose strength is his defensive play and he slots into a back 3 when we're on the front foot.

To my mind, Hojbjerg and Skipp's starting position needs to be like a traditional midfield 2 and at least 10 yards deeper than tanguy, with little licence to get forward unless we are seriously dominating play. With them 'sitting' patrolling the flanks and channels, our FBs plus Tanguy will have more freedom to get forward. Instead of Hojbjerg and Skipp running themselves into the ground as box to box mids, their remit will be to break down play and/or receive possession from the CBs, then pick out whichever of Tanguy, Reg and RB is in the best position to get it to our front 3.

To repeat, I don't think 433 suits our personnel but if we do have to use it, we'll get stuck between City's creativity and Pool's graft no matter what combination of players we use.

So I guess i'm arguing for more of a 4-2-1-3 formation. Not sure if anyone plays that currently outside of computer games.

They'll exercise their option to purchase him for something like £15 million once they're happy with the price they'll receive from the prospective buyer

This is why I find myself asking why we don't cash in on Ndombele now because he's ill-suited for both the Dembele or the Modric role because of a combination of lacking graft when we don't have the ball and tactical nous when we do, and that money can be invested either in players who are a better fit for that role (Sabitzer and Aouar being the obvious names who are reportedly available) or, given the current circumstances, get the Romero deal sorted with some cold, hard cash

On the ever-growing list of "What if..."s of the past three years, one that's got to be up there is if Poch's priorities in the summer of 2019 weren't Ndombele and Lo Celso with Penandes as the fallback option if we couldn't get Lo Celso over the line as things played out, instead it was Lo Celso and Penandes with Ndombele as the fallback option if we couldn't get one of the others over the line. Obviously Penandes wouldn't be as prolific in front of goal due to the dearth of penalties we get every decade, but the combination of Lo Celso and Penandes would let us control games that much better than we have at any point since the 2017-18 season

You know what . You're bang on with that summary mate. You're right you just cant use N'Dombele in a midfield three.
Perhaps Lo Celso or Dele would be better suited.

I'd be embarassed if we had Penandes. Seriously. I know a lot of people (particularly pundits) just assume that all fans just want to win at all costs. But I don't. Also the flak. We get enough of it now (Kane diving etc) when we benefit from it probably less than anyone else. Can you imagine if we were really trying?

We're so blessed with amazing options <laugh>.

It's almost enough to make a grown man cry knowing we once got to witness Modric and van der Vaart, then Dembele and Eriksen and now we're left with Winks, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Dele...

What did Spurs, as a club and/ or fanbase, do to deserve this?

I don't think that a lot of our midfielders are bad players, exactly, but there's very little in the way of a working combination between them.
A deep-lying playmaker would work well with a lot of them and a proper holding midfielder probably would, too.
Hopefully something will get sorted, either in the transfer market or on the training ground.

I think HBIC is right when he questions why we're holding on to Tanguy when all available evidence suggests he just isn't suited to the PL. If an entire system has to be adapted to suit an individual player, chances are the problem is the player, not the system. We saw the same 2 years ago when - somewhat bizarrely - our entire midfield was set up to be lopsided and wide open in order to accommodate Serge Aurier of all people.

However, swapping Tanguy for Dele or Lo Celso leaves us with the problem PNP flagged - a lack of creativity and thrust from the midfield. Dele isn't good enough at carrying the ball and Gio isn't good enough at passing.

Which is why I repeat: if Nuno is dead set on a traditional 433, we should aim to mimic the way Pool use their midfield 3 which is loads of graft with a sprinkling of creativity. Skipp and Lo Celso either side of Hojbjerg accomplishes this more than any other combo imo.

Stage 2 of the Pool approach is top quality flying FBs. I believe we already have one in Reguilon (plus hopefully Sess will grow into the role) but RB will consequently need HUGE investment and from what I've seen of him, Tomiyasu isn't the profile we'd need for the role.

Bottom line is we currently have 7 CMs at the club which is a bit ridiculous.

I don't think they're particularly good though either, certainly not in a Spurs shirt anyway. We've seen the two big money buys do great things at other clubs but very little for us whilst the other choices are someone that hasn't turned up for about three years and two others who are likely to be sold, or should be anyway.

Excluding Skipp for youthful reasoning, Hojbjerg is the only midfielder I'm comfortable with and whom I think can play in any sort of partnership/ system.

We don't seem to be linked with any midfielders of late either, it seems all out for the defence - which is understandable - and then a potential partner/ backup to Kane.

I think it's possible Nuno will use Ndombele as he did Traore at Wolves as an impact sub and given his apparent distaste for graft that might suit the team with CK's midfield 3

Erik ten Hag has more or less admitted Ajax would like Bergwijn.

"I never go into names but it is like ABC, if I explain the profile we have here, Bergwijn fits it."

Calcio Mercato are saying we’ve agreed a fee with Bologna for Tomiyasu and the deal will go through once he’s done at the Olympics.

It also has to be said that a few Spurs fans responded to his performances at the Euros by saying that would be what he would look like if he signed for us: flashes of quality, but usually 30-40 yards away from where they'd be of any use to us

Remember how we signed Gil and Gollini earlier this week?

Because there's plenty of people in the replies for all the club's tweets who apparently missed this...

€50m guaranteed, that’s a very good price for a 23 year old defender. If Atalanta reject that then I won’t blame the club if they move on to other targets. Can’t keep upping our offer and then seeing Atalanta raise the price.
