Please tell me there is a decent player in there somewhere?
He had arguably one of the worst debuts a Sunderland player has ever had on Saturday, and last nights performance wasnt much better.

I really had high hopes for this lad, especially after hearing he'd started against Arsenal for yous a few days before we signed him. I was expecting a player that would show he should be playing at a much higher level than league 1.

The lad just cannot defend or tackle at all. He doesn't even look good enough at this level.

I think most of us were in the “don’t know/can’t defend” groups, simply because we haven’t seen much of him.
But most are in agreement that he has a pretty good left foot and can put in some decent crosses.
Some see him more suited to wide midfield than full back.

He might need to muscle up a bit to perform down there in the third division of English football. He has shown signs of technique and pace, if he can learn to hold his own with the beefy cloggers of the lower leagues, he might turn into a player.

A lot of us were wondering why he went out on loan, when we are short of cover at FB. I guess now we know. Toughen him up for us, try not to break him, and I hope you finish above Pompey <ok>

Ps. Thanks for Kevin Phillips, though that was a long time ago now.

What a player Super Kev was, he'd have been an England regular if he'd have played for one of the bigger clubs.

Getting back to the OP, i can't see Vokins getting alot of game time for us after the way he's started.
Hes fortunate at the moment that he's our only fit LB, because the other 2 are injured.
Our first choice LB is due back at the end of the month. He's also a young lad, but he's one of our best players and we have missed him loads.

He's an attacking fullback like Vokins, but physically he's much better equipped.
Alot of us were hoping Vokins would be the ideal replacement in the short term.

After that Arsenal game Ralph wasn`t complementary about our defending as a whole, and clearly he doesn`t think Vokins (and Valery who is now on loan at Birmingham) are up to it (yet). That he let Vokins go on loan during an injury crisis is a concern for me, despite him signing a long contract only a few months ago.

Definitely sounds like one of our recent academy products unfortunately. Gone very downhill since the days of Lallana, Bale and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

I can think of a worse debut <laugh>

At least he didn't get sent off after 70 seconds.

You mean below Pompey. Some of us like all Hampshire clubs to do well.

He’s not in the quality of Luke Shaw when he was ours, he’s much more Josh Sims - not good enough for the Prem but could have a decent league 1 or championship career in the end if given time.

We’ve got a fair few academy lads in that situation unfortunately.

Let's hope that he is another Super Kelvin Davis and comes back from Sunderland and becomes a club legend.
It's way too early to write a young lad off after a handful of senior games. I can remember Matty Targett getting shameful abuse from some fans when he first played for Saints and now he is a solid PL player at Villa.
The lad is only 20 and he must have some quality or else he wouldn't still be at the club.

The little I saw of him he looked dangerous going forward, very dangerous. Whenever he was involved in an attack, things seemed to happen. His defending, however, was pretty average. From the sound of it that's the aspect of his game that you need so he may just be the wrong person for the job.

Has he been to the TAA training school, then? Wonderful going forward but as LFC fans found out on Sunday, found wanting in the defensive aspect.

    I am very impressed.

Not with Vokins defending but that he has only been with you a short time and you can spell his name correctly, whereas most of us on here still can't.<laugh>
