Wales v England Competition - FIFA World Cup Finals Tournament Stage - Group B Date - Tuesday, 29 November 2022 Kick off - 19:00 Venue - Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan, Qatar Following their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Iran, Wales find themselves in ‘the last chance saloon’ knowing that a win over England is the only possible route to the knockout stages, and even that may not be enough if either Iran or the USA win their match - a draw between these 2 teams is the only way that Wales could progress. On Friday morning, 10-man Wales succumbed to a last-ditch defeat by Iran in Qatar. Roared on by the fervent and almost entirely Iranian crowd, Carlos Queiroz's side were extremely unlucky not to score early in the second half as Sardar Azmoun and Gholizadeh both struck the post within the space of a few seconds. Wales were utterly ragged and, as they pushed forward in search of the late winning goal they desperately needed, a long ball over the top left the defence exposed and the onrushing Hennessey brought down Taremi, and following a video assistant referee check, Hennessy was shown a red card. Substitute Roozbeh Cheshmi struck from 20 yards nine minutes into stoppage time, before Ramin Rezaeian finished off a counter-attack to seal victory for a revitalised Iran side, who have renewed hope of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Later that same day, England drew 0-0 with the USA, labouring to a drab draw and missing the chance to seal qualification for the World Cup knockout stage. Gareth Southgate's side were second best for long periods as they failed to match the energy and intensity of the USA, who maintain their own hopes of making the last 16. England - with Harry Maguire solid in defence - were unimpressive and rode their luck when Weston McKennie missed an easy chance and Christian Pulisic struck the bar in the first half. As a result, England top the group with 4 points from 2 games, and need just a draw against Wales to progress. Wales have played 103 international matches against England, winning 14, drawing 21 and losing 68. Wales last beat England in May 1984 when they won 1-0 thanks to a 17th minute headed goal from Mark Hughes. Turning to Tuesday evening, most pundits quite understandably cannot see anything other than a comfortable England victory. However, I’m going for a 97th minute own goal by Harry Maguire to give Wales a 1-0 victory, and with the Yanks and the Iranians drawing 0-0, Wales will qualify for the knockout stage along with England I can but dream
Obviously the perfect result is Wales 4 - 0 England with Iran V USA producing a winner. The more realistic result is Wales 0 - 4 England unfortunately. I haven't lost all hope completely though as England aren't all that and there have been quite a few upsets already in this tournament. I just hope we show that we aren't really as bad as we've been in the opening two matches - because we are much better than we've shown so far. Good luck to the team - let's hope for a footballing miracle. I say ‘miracle’ but really all that needs to happen is that we win the game and the other ends in a draw. That’s not really beyond the realms of possibility is it ?
Rioters have started fires and pelted cars with bricks in Brussels following Belgium's shock 2-0 loss to Morocco at the World Cup. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-Brussels-Belgium-lose-Morocco-World-Cup.html
It will undoubtedly be a Rorkes Drift performance and at best probably a 2-0 defeat but it could be a lot worse! I just hope Taff's dream is reality.
Sorry different game Portugal v Uruguay.......just seen the most ridiculous penalty awarded to Portugal. My love for the game falls even deeper into the crevices.
Improbable maybe, but can you imagine the crying and screaming over the border and in the scum media if we did beat them ? It would be so sweet ! But hardly a pfffft from Wales if we lose !
Waited for so long to get there, I may get disappointed to lose a game there, but to lose with such a bad performance Against Iran is gut wrenching. Want the pride restored !
Spot on. Such an anti-climax to be going into this game with no hope. This was such a mouth watering clash before the tournament started. Now I just want it to be over and forgotten.
There is hope. England aren't world beaters by any stretch of the imagination. Yes - they should win, so should have quite a few teams in this tournament - but that hasn't gone to plan. It could well be a drubbing, but it wouldn't shock me if we beat them either.
