Those were the days when ‘the bench’ meant ‘the bench’. Not rows of plush, leather bucket seats.

 

The game took place at the end of February 1983. I had forgotten about how bad the state of the pitch was towards the end of the season.

 

It was even worse a decade or so earlier.

At the final whistle all the Liverpool players were on their knees crying as Tom Whalley strode through them looking for signs of life

Was a great photo of that in the Watford Observer the following week

 

My Dad was in the Rookery that day too.

 

I wonder how Barry Endean would perform in the current team? It is the same division, after all.

I only watched until Garbett's equaliser. What is more stunning is the Watford trainer, whose name I forget but he went on to manage Workington, lighting up a cigarette whilst he is sitting on the bench next to Ken Furphy.

 

Just had a quick look, and I bet there’s loads of these in a match of this vintage, but we should have had a penalty at 8 minutes 30 ish. I mean, in terms of VAR delays it’s probably stretching it, but…
