So the PGA band wagon moves in to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Wells Fargo Championship and the 11th time it has been played for. In its short time as a regular PGA haunt it has always had the honour of being the tournament before the 'Un-official 5th Major' next week, The Players. So we can get to see who is playing well leading into one of the big tournaments of the year. Ricky Fowler won here last year and went on to claim a T2nd place at the Players so we need to keep an eye on who dos play well here.

Its a tough course if your wild with the driver, and you have to be able to hit the green with a high percentage of your approach shots. The fact that the average distance to the pin for all 4 rounds last year was 40 feet would also indicate that 3 putting is not an option. The par 5's are accessible, but all come with dangers, so they are the kind of stats we need if we are to do well around here...

Of the players who have done well here, and there are only a few, Johnathon Byrd has made the top 10 three times in the past 4 years, only 6 other players have made the Top 10 in the same period. We have had consecutive years of play-off holes to sort the winner out, Ricky Fowler and Lucas Glover taking the wins in overtime. Plus no one has ever won this tournament twice in its 11 year history, yet...!!!

So to who can have a chance...

Nick Watney is playing some good golf at the moment, shooting 4 consecutive 69’s last week in New Orleans to finish 8th, with 21 birdies and a final score of -15. He is currently ranked 8th in GIR, and 1st in GIR from 175-200 yards, a stat you need for this course. My only concern is with his putting but he must feel good with that part of his game to shoot 21 of them last week…

Lucas Glover looks good for another display at Quail Hollow this year, and hopefully will become the 1st person to win this event twice, winning like he did in a play-off back in 2011. A T4th finish last week, he held the lead after the 54th hole, then shot -7 for the last round to come up short of winning last week. (Billy Horschel shooting -8 for the last day might have something to do with that though…) Ranked 10th in Total Driving and 42nd in All Round Play, a 3rd place in 2009 and winner back in 2011, he has to be a contender for this week…

Chris Kirk has an All Round Ranking of 7th, mainly because of his ability to score heavy and hit the greens. Not the Longest or most Accurate from the tee, but he can play from anywhere on the course approaching the green. He has 8 rankings in the top 20 for ALL Approach shots, ranging from greater than 200 yards, 18th, to 6th for GIR from less than 100 yards. Plus he lies 35th in 3-Putt Avoidance for the season. If he clicks then he will go close to opening his account for the year and adding to his only Tour victory back in 2011.

Kevin Streelman is currently playing the best golf of his professional career to date, and has made that all important first win on the PGA Tour when winning the Tamp Bay Championship last month. He is ranked 6th in Total Driving, 40th for GIR and 26th in Proximity to the Hole on approach shots. With his All-Round ranking at 27 and Ball striking at 16th in the table, he has the game to record his 2nd Tour victory here…

    Nick Watney @ 25/1...
    Lucas Glover @ 40/1...
    Chris Kirk @ 66/1...
    Kevin Streelman @ 80/1...

All done in the usual £2.50 e/w with PadPow... Good luck as always...<cheers>

Just the 3 for me this week

Geoff Ogilvy - 100/1 - Always back this former major winner. But im more than happy with 100/1...he usually player better on the 'harder' courses better than the target courses

    Brendon De Jonge - 66/1 -

Jordan Speith - 66/1 - this guy will one day be competing at the very top. Has the amatuer/collage day credentials to go far.

    Leaderboard after the 1st round...

    7 players are tied @ -5

    T1 - Nick Watney............... -5
    T8 - Lucas Glover .............. -4
    T8 - Kevin Streelman.......... -4
    T14 - Jordan Spieth........... -3
    T53 - Chris Kirk.................. E
    T53 - Joe Ogilvie................ E
    T95 - Brendon de Jonge ...... +2

Well, the conditions were good for shooting low scores and a whole host of them did, but they could all have gone lower. The greens have had some extensive work done to them, re-laying most parts of the putting surface, on the majority of the greens. Its got something to do with the bad weather they have had recently and just simply not had the time or conditions to get them spot on...

Anyway i cant complain as ive got 3 of my 4 picks in the top 10, but there is another 3 days and rounds to go and a lot can change in that time... The greens will only get worse as the tournament rolls on so any sort of lead could be pegged back...<cheers>

    Leaderboard after the 2nd round...

    Phil Mickelson @ -9

    T2 - Nick Watney............. -7
    T10 - Lucas Glover........... -5
    T13 - Kevin Streelman...... -4
    T13 - Jordan Spieth......... -4
    T35 - Chris Kirk................ -1
    T60 - Brendon de Jonge ..... +1
    CUT - Joe Ogilvie

Big Phil took control of the 2nd day by shooting the lowest score of the day along with 2nd placed Scott Gardiner, but there are some good names backing up behind them. Westy, Rory, Watney and Glover are all within 4 shots and this could be a good last 2 days. Phil hasnt won this event before in its 11 year history and he would love to add it to his collection and will take some catching at the top of the leaderboard. But you have to say that these greens may well catch someone out and cost them a shot or 2 as they are so bad. So its not all doom and gloom for the chasing pack yet...<ok>

    Leaderboard after the 3rd round...

Joint leaders of Watney + Mickelson @ -8

    T1 - Nick Watney................ -8
    T10 - Kevin Streelman.......... -5
    T15 - Lucas Glover............... -4
    T29 - Chris Kirk.................... -1
    T29 - Jordan Spieth............. -1
    T47 - Brendon de Jonge ....... +1

Saturdays are called moving days in the golfing world, but this saturday was anything but a moving day. Big Phil lost this 2 shot lead after posting a +1, 73 and Nick Watney joined him on -8 after his -1, 71 score. Of the players left in the field, some 69 of them, 44 of these shot either -1, par or +1 for their collective efforts. So we have to assume that the greens and course managed to quell any big movements we associate with a 'Moving Saturday'. John Senden shot the best round of the day when his -5 score saw him shoot up 31 places to join a whole host of other players tied for 4th...

Its quiet simple for me today, in fact its elementary my dear Watney. Shoot 1 shot lower than any one else later today and win me the money...!!!

So for the 3rd year running the Wells Fargo Championships went to a play-off to find the winner, but it wasnt the pairings that we thought or hoped it would be. Derek Ernst a 500/1 shot at the beginning of the week beat David Lynn a 150/1 shot for his debut tour win on the PGA. How this happened, god only knows, but the fact he only shot a -2 round score on Sunday shows what a complete collapse the main contenders did. Take nothing away from the 22 year old who no-one has ever heard of, but Mickelson, Watney, Westwood and even Rory couldn't manage a sub-par round between them on Sunday...!!!

Anyway i got my e/w money off Kevin Streelman finishing in T6th, but not the full amount as there were a rook load of em on the same score...

This week The Players Championships, and so another chance to find the winner...<cheers>
