Didn’t know where to post this and noticed there isn’t a specific thread for the World Cup so thought I’d make one

Is this the worst German WC squad in living memory?

Still a lot of very good players, but their best players are all quite long in the tooth (Kimmich excepted)

Arguably their 1998 squad was the worst given how superannuated some of their squad was, for example
    Lothar Matthaus - 37
    Andreas Kopke - 36
Jurgen Klinsmann, Thomas Helmer - 33
Jurgen Kohler, Thomas Hassler, Ulf Kirsten, Olaf Marschall, Olaf Thon - 32
    Stefan Reuter - 31
Oliver Bierhoff, Andreas Moller - 30

That's why German fans were genuinely surprised that they reached the 2002 final, given how low expectations were as they were blooding practically an entire squad

Fair comment though the quality of the likes of Matthaus, Klinsmann, Kohler and Moller was of the highest order.

Possibly, but still plenty in midfield and attack - especially the Bayern axis.

It's the age-old issue in international football where a team tries to wring just that little too much out of the same core of players with no attention being paid to the continuity of the squad - which was fatal to Germany in 1998 as Matthias Sammer had to retire due to injury prior to the tournament in spite being a major component in the team

Wish they were still in the Spurs squad. Seeing Sanchez and Dier still robbing a wage after all these years is criminal.

Dier, Maguire, Trent, Henderson and Rashford all very lucky, albeit Henderson is probably picked on the basis Phillips may not be 100%, even though he himself ain't a definite starter as I reckon Bellingham and Rice will be the spine in midfield.

Maddison definitely well deserved, shame he'll likely only get about two five-minute cameos, far too creative and attacking for Southgate's liking.

Tomori and Toney very (very) unfortunate.

If he even makes the matchday squad remembering that 3 will get left out each time - Got a feeling that Maddison & Trent will be 2 of those and are basically just having a 3-5 week holiday in Qatar.

Just to head off some of the arguments that those he picked have experience. (1) many of them are completely out of form currently and (2) how are others that are never picked going to get experience? Toney gets in the last squad but isn't played and then doesn't get the WC call up, Rashford has a couple of good games in a season and gets in. Toney might just wonder what he has to do to get picked, and it's actually worth taking him along if nothing else to bring him on for the penalty shoot out. Meanwhile Phillips has played about 10 minutes this season and may not even be fit now, and we know the arguments with "Never let England down" Maguire (except he has, as recently as his last game), because it's better to pick someone on what they did two years ago instead of how they are playing for their team now. Oh hang on a minute, he isn't even playing for his team now. But he'll be a starter, as will Sterling. And you won't want to hear me go on about Sterling again.

    Stirling over Toni?
    Maguire?
    Dier?
Can't say I'm surprised tbh...in fact, the only surprise is he didn't take Sessegnon

England looked good today in thrashing India. Especially the batting.

What do mean, not that World Cup? We have a great chance of winning it!

Rashford played well tonight and pace and versatility are useful, especially off the bench. Probably gave him the edge over Toney - as well as the experience of playing in tournaments.

Toney probably ****ed himself with two off-field issues so close to the finalised squad.
