    17 of the French squad are either immigrants to France or the children of immigrants.

    From which we can conclude, without fear of contradiction, that what England needs to win the World Cup is more immigration.

    So, through a process of Holmesian deduction and ruthless application of logic, we arrive at the conclusion that England, to succeed in international association football competitions, requires increased immigration from former French colonies, largely in Africa. And France.

    I shall write to the Football Association governing committee forthwith.

    I think I’m advocating not only a return to Empire, Stan, but also expansionism, taking over the former French, Belgian and German colonies. I believe Blackadder established that the latter comprised solely of a small sausage factory in Tanganyika.
