Rossi has yet to make it as a top pro? 27 caps for Italy, including being selected as their captain, would suggest otherwise. He's signing for Fiorentina today, despite being injured for the best part of two seasons.
Posters on here might be interested to hear that this transfer was organised by our old friend David Pleat. Pleat has strong contacts within the Standard Liege club and has been helping Daniel Levy in an advisory capacity for quite a while now. Pleat was able to accelerate this transfer and help bring the move to a swift conclusion. .
So, in essence, United after finishing dealing with us, sold their player to a club known to have connections with Pleat and Spurs. / both apply really!
They didn't sell him, Standard were free to agree a deal with him and then pay the minimal compensation UEFA requires.
If Shawcross was at United he would be starting for them, no doubt. The same goes for Pique. It's fair to say United have not missed Rossi, having had Ronaldo, Hernandez, Van Persie and slightly lesserly Rooney. Pogba we shall see about, but given he has made the step up to Juve's match squad already it would suggest he will make something of himself. There's also all the youngsters that Fergie hung on to and turned out to be tripe... Eagles, Campbell, Evans, Gibson I could go on and on...
Then what exactly is SAF complaining about?? I thought they sold him, have to be honest didn't follow the story that closely.
We wanted to sign him in the summer, but Utd wanted £6m in compensation and they're entitled to some if he signed for another English side. He went to Liege and the Mancs only got a trivial sum, then we signed him for about half of what Utd wanted and they get another minor payment of about £150k. Fergie thinks that we set it all up in the summer to avoid paying Utd any money and to half the overall fee.
United were entitled to compensation because he is under 24. The tribunal took an age to meet and then indicated it would be looking to award United in the region of £6m, at which point we withdrew. Such a compensation arrangement does not happen in Belgium, so when he went there, United got nothing. Now United get 5% of what we paid for him, believed to be around £150k.
Seems an outlandish claim to get another club to act as a stepping stone for 6mths, "ere, you take him, and we'll buy him off you in Jan"?? seems to be messing the player about a bit. Did he not settle in Belgium or something?
The manager that signed him got the sack and the player's also had trouble with feeling homesick, apparently, Notso.
The claim is they changed their manager and Fryers isn't fancied by the new man, plus he is feeling homesick !! As I mentioned a few days ago, I am still surprised by this move as the general mood at Spurs on this player was very downbeat. In fact a certain ex Blackburn Rovers captain reckoned we had dodged a bullet by not getting him in the summer, because he was acting Big Time Charlie all the time.
If I'm honest I do think Zeki was told by Levy to go Standard for the 6 months and then we'll sign him up in Jan for a cut price fee. The "official statement" from the club said something along the lines of: We were initially interested in the Summer but couldn't strike a deal and the player eventually moved to Belgium, During his time there he made 7 appearances but a change in manager caused his chances to be limited and by then, he had become home sick and we therefore made an offer and it got accepted blah blah blah. Liege then released a statement backing up this claim.
