The point is that players going to a club at one time or another doesn't determine the size and history of a club.. Everton are one of the most successful clubs in English football and are up there with the likes of Villa. Newcastle are a good jump down along with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Whether we like it or not Newcastle has been nothing more than the Derek Chisora of English football for 70 years..... that has an impact ... saying we finished 4th a few times and have a bigger stadium is doesn't eclipse a massive gulf in historical success.
It's 11 if you're from Newcastle 10 if you're not because they don't count the fairs Cup.(they should) regardless the gulf between the number of trophies or major honours for Everton and Newcastle is huge. Newcastle have nothing to win that argument other than having a larger ground which just doesn't negate it I'm sorry. I absolutely hate Everton btw, but I'm talking reality here gentlemen! Are Newcastle a small club? No I don't think that, but they haven't been and aren't up there with Villa or Everton.... right now Newcastle have the potential to become something bigger.
Those can be used but really it's not the same as winning a huge about more trophies. The future will hopefully change things. Only Newcastle fans or maybe people that don't know what Everton have won in comparison would say Newcastle was a bigger club.
No, no, no. Chaos simply wants the biggest Club decided by "history" and "trophies" even though neither Club have won a trophy of note for nigh on 30 years. Because what was won over 30 years ago clearly decides who is a big Club now. Nothing else is relevant.
No, that's a point that I was moving away from, as it doesn't have huge value when it doesn't noticeably impact current or future performance. Surely we should only be concerned about any club having a 'size' that currently gives them a greater pull towards signing players, attracting more lucrative sponsors etc. than we do? I only really care if it directly impacts our ability to improve and increase our own chances of success. So, with that in mind... If a player that had no prior connection to either club had a direct choice between joining us or joining Everton in the summer transfer window, if the contracts offered by each club were identical and both clubs were starting the new season in the same league, which club do you think the player would choose to join?
Past doesn't really matter, just the natural order at the time. Right now, if I was tiering clubs, it'd be something like: S Tier: Real Madrid, Bayern (if either wants you, you go, no matter where you are) A Tier: Liverpool, Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Barca, Dortmund, Juve B Tier: Leverkusen, Spurs, Chelsea, Atletico, AC Milan, Inter, Roma, PSG. Then there's a load of clubs in C Tier, now including Newcastle, Villa, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Napoli, Atalanta, etc., etc., trying to break into the elite. So size is just relative to time but tends to explain why we buy Bruno (OL), Botman (Lille), Gordon (Everton), Barnes (Leicester) and will almost certainly not be getting Chiesa. To advance you have to break these rules, as we did with Tonali who went from C to B, or be really smart buying from the untiered clubs.
Every window we get names like Chiesa Raphinha etc etc but it's clear we're more Gnonto and Jack Harrison esque. The money isn't available and the clubs not as attractive as we'd like to think... essentially the big names will always have better options
Exactly - we only ever sign average players from English clubs, usually from the division below. We never signed Trippier from Atletico Madrid, Guimaraes from Lyon, Botman from Lille, Isak from Real Sociedad or Tonali from AC Milan.
None were big names like chiesa... it's the blue chip players I'm talking about. Most nufc fans probably never saw that lot play before they came here. Arsenal didn't fancy Guimareas or isak which is why they're here. Chelsea opted out for Gordon. There's a pecking order.
None of which lends weight to your assertion that players like Harrison and Gnonto are the level we target.
Have to disagree once more. Chiesa is not a big name. Never was and never will be. Harrison has 8 letters in it and Chiesa has only 6. Therefore, Harrison clearly is the bigger name of the two.
