I'm quite comfortable that all facts and the opinions of people I trust In the game all back up my humble opinion
It's absolutely not a fact, he's nowhere near the worst keeper in the league, he wasn't even the worst keeper on the pitch in our last game. You can pick out a single stat to try and prove any argument FBRef has him with a save percentage of 70.9, one of the highest in the league - https://fbref.com/en/comps/10/keepers/Championship-Stats The Punter Page ranks him 14th in the league - https://www.thepunterspage.com/goalkeeping-stats/ He's 13th for clean sheets - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/weisseweste/pokalwettbewerb/GB2 What none of the stat pages calculate, is his contribution to the way Hull City play. Nobody's claiming he's a brilliant keeper, we all expect Pandur to be our No.1 next season, but the claims made about Allsop are largely inaccurate ****e.
There's a trend on twitter of people posting specific graphs depicting two specific stats across two dimensions, and labeling each quadrant with what it means to be in that quadrant. People seem to think this is a really insightful form of analysis but it's unscientific. The labels they write on are just one teenage geek's interpretation of what those stats mean, but because it's on a snazzy-looking graph people lap it up and accept it means what the person producing it says it does. It's these graphs that are always being shared as the ones that "prove" Allsop is among the worst keepers in the league, and usually the stat relates to a combination of xG and goals conceded. That's way too simplistic to draw factual conclusions about how good a goalkeeper is, even if shot-stopping was the only concern, which it isn't. The fact that he's been picked whenever available and never dropped is a better indicator of form than looking at a stat you don't understand but assuming it's conclusive because it's presented on a smart graph. Allsop obviously isn't one of those keepers who saves your team every week with his amazing saves. But he isn't this liability making howlers every week either. He has a fanbase who've never liked him and have frothed themselves up to the point that they see almost every simple goal that goes in the corner as a massive howler by him. He spilled one shot at Swansea several months ago which was bad, and he's had a couple of passing out related gaffs in the meantime. That's about it really in terms of errors that aren't massively overblown because of a pre-existing agenda. He's also played a big part in transforming our possession game which you can't ignore. Maybe one day we'll have a keeper who saves shots like Myhill and can also play out like Allsop.
Allsop is a poor championship goalkeeper but has very good ability at passing for the championship I look forward to him being on the bench
I think this is spot on - given our chosen style of play Allsop has been the most appropriate keeper in the club this season and seems to attract unnecessarily severe criticism for his performances. Your ideal combination of Allsop and Myhill's strengths would be brilliant. Just as a crude statistical footnote, Allsop's published percentage for goals saved this season is quoted as 70.9% over 35 matches and Matt Ingram's is 51.7% over 10 matches.
That surprised me, as someone who thinks the criticism of Allsop is over the top, so I googled championship goalie stats and looked at the first few sites.FBRef has him 5th/29 on save % and 14th/29 on clean sheet %. FootballTransfers rates him as 14th/63 (including all sqaud goalies I think). ThePuntersPage rates him as 14th/46, or 14th/26 restricted to those playing in min 40% of games. StatsChecker has him 13th in list of most saves. The worst result was the last which was the overall rating on WhoScored.com which has him 24th/34. So, not a fact then?
If you keep letting in soft goals (v. Middlesbrough, Cardiff & Blackburn to name but 3 that spring to mind) then as a goalkeeper you are going to be criticized
He's not just being criticised for that though is he? He's being slated all the time, even when he's done nothing wrong. On this very thread people were taking a pop at him for not saving an inch perfect free kick that Gordon Banks wouldn't have got anywhere near. It's ridiculously over the top.
Only a moron was blaming him for the freekick Hit the side netting The 2nd goal was poor from him But im somehow comparing him to neur Maybe i am too harsh
It was poor from the lino and ref to fail to see the ball had gone out, poor of Slater et al to then switch off, poor of Jacob to fail to challenge for the header. It maybe wasn’t wonderful by Allsop but it wasn’t poor. Where I think he is poor is with shots close to his body. But he played his part in a great victory against Coventry.
Criticising Allsop in a game where the opposition keeper made two howlers that essentially gifted us the three points, is a bit rich.
Well said. Of course the headed goal might have been stopped but the obsessive criticism from some is every week, several times a week and is tedious to say the least. It doesn't achieve anything either (unless there is a hidden agenda).
That's all I am criticising him for - well, that and the fact he doesn't command his area - what others do is down to them.
