SHUIL ROYALE 3.50 Kemp 14/1 if gets half decent ground must have a decent chance of finishing in the frame at the very least.
OK Corral, Newsworthy, Third Act, and Cheltenian are previous winners so your observation is spot on me ole odd mate. He do tends to start a lot of his better bumpers off here and has a stunning strike rate although he fields seven runners over the two events which will hardly enhance his record. I like his Stowaway Magic in the second race and have noticed this one missing engagements over the winter waiting for the right one maybe. Two horses that I think will outrun their odds are SIR ANTHONY BROWNE 20/1 who could be viewed as the King second string and BRANDENBURG GATE 14/1 in the second race who I am led to believe Charlie boy thinks a fair bit of.
A couple of animals that I like are running tomorrow but both have it to do. BALLYHENRY is definitely better than he showed at Newbury on his hurdles debut. The soft ground that day was very tacky and I thought he did too much early and the combination took its toll. It was a very decent race with Champers N Ice winning so it was no disgrace. He bumps into another decent animal in Label Des Obeaux tomorrow but I will not be in the least bit surprised if he doesn't give that one a run for its money. It seems that every Ben Pauling runner gets supported these days but with his strike rate I am not surprised. SEEBRIGHT is the other runner I have a crush on. He still has very few miles on the clock as he has had his share of setbacks. His comeback run recently was promising enough as he showed up for a long way before tiring three out. I know his target is the Grand National in the spring so it is always a concern that he may not be being pushed but the yard usually run their horses on their merits. He is 20/1 tomorrow and that is tempting. I am a big fan of Victor Dartnall, if he were closer I would definitely have one with him. His SHAMMICK BOY (who Nass should have a share in) ran a decent pipe opener at the weekend. He will strip fitter next time and has been dropped 4lbs. The yard are targeting a race at Kempton at the end of the month and he should not be missed.
Guys slightly off topic for a second - got £100 to split over 4 bets at £25 each for Cheltenham - favs or short ones welcome - done £25 on Thistlecrack at 5/4 - give me 3 more fellas !
My view on 3 potential winners that are not ridiculously short. Bristol De Mai - JLT Novices Chase 7/2 (should be bigger on the day) Gibralfaro - Triumph Hurdle 10/1 (likely to shorten significantly if he wins the Adonis) Don Poli - Gold Cup 6/1
In the opener at Kempton I am very keen on Pam Sly's Taweyla at around the 7/1 mark. The Teofilo mare is totally unexposed in the context of this race, with just 2 runs over hurdles to her name. On hurdles debut, she won nicely at Worcester, jumping fluently if slightly to the right - going right handed today so no issue. Whilst the beaten horses are no superstars, the 2nd and 3rd have both won since. She was then beaten into 3rd at Huntingdon behind a Ferguson animal that subsequently won at 1/9 at Perth and previous winner Buy Back Bob, who has not been out since. Clearly the ground is an unknown for her, but there is soft ground form amongst her Dam's progeny (Harry Hunt and Kammaan).
Had a decent study of the 2 bumpers stick. In the 4.25, I was taken by the debut run of Cheltenham De Vaige in atrocious conditions at Warwick, he travelled powerfully at the head of affairs before tiring in the last couple of furlongs. Kempton might see him to better effect and he could go well at a big price with that experience under his belt. However, my pick in this one is based on one of my bumper rules - look for Alflora offspring in heavy ground bumpers - and I will be having a speculative e/w on Ermyn's Emerald in this one. Trainer Pat Phelan doesn't have many bumper runners but has an enviable strike rate - 5 from 20 having obliged over the last 5 years. In the 4.55, I'm going with another soft ground sire in Jeremy, who has Too Far Gone. Alan King posted on his website: "In the second division of the bumper we run Too Far Gone, a big, backward horse who is just starting to show a little more but will improve for the experience." That will do nicely for me
From the Alan King column- Thomas Shelby is a fine big horse and one we've always liked, although he's been a little behind as he had a stress fracture in the autumn.I'd love to get a run into Sir Antony Browne with a view to going to Newbury in March for the Doncaster Sales bumper we won with The Unit last year; So one to put in the tracker for next time
Small stakes e/w L15 at Kempton: 1.05 Taweyla 8/1 3.50 Wizards Bridge 9/1 4.25 Ermyns Emerald 50/1 4.55 Too Far Gone 20/1
