Can't say I've met many famous people at all. Peter Beardsley, when I was about 14 and in the box at Newcastle. We went down for the pitchside photograph and I was looking like a little lost bairn and he called me over and I got the photo with his hands on my shoulders. Might dig that one out next time I go home and stick it on the photos thread actually. Jackie Charlton, met on a bridge in Filey when I was about 10. Seemed nice but I would probably have thought everyone was nice at that age EDIT: I was actually 12 when I met Beardsley. ****, time flies. It was the last game of the season, if I remember correctly Titus Bramble scored an overhead kick to give us the victory over Chelsea and send us into Europe!! (That sounds like something a fantasy writer couldn't make up but I swear it's true )
Rolf Harris was no bother at all (not even at the matinee ) but his M.D. was an absolute tool. No mate. I have never had the slightest inclination to be in his gang.
Not bad mate. Not bad at all. I thought Terry Reid never got the recognition he deserved. Apparently Jimmy Page asked him to sing in his new band. He refused but recommended Robert Plant. The rest, as we know, is history. Could never get the hang of Captain Beefheart though. Too way out for me.
A friend of mine played on Chester Burnett's british tour, Don's spiritual daddy , and inspiration for many, I saw Terry Ried play at Langholm Towers when he was 16 and fronting Peter Jays band, a few years before our tea party, for such a luminary he was charm personified.
Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers? Good grief man that`s going back some. Saw them when they backed Joe Brown at the Odeon in Sunderland about 100 years ago. edit: Good God that`s pre Cream, pre Beatles, pre every bloody thing.
I've met and worked with a few mainly muso 'celebs' over the years - one of the funniest occasions was when I was a film extra (with my cousin) in the Pink Floyd movie The Wall, at the end of one days filming the film crew was chatting to Geldof with Waters and Mason and Alan Parker in the periphery listening to the conversation - both myself and my cousin being fans of Floyd we wanted their autographs, so we nonchalantly waltzed up to them with our pens and paper, so with out stretched arms, Geldof automatically went take or pens to sign - and my cousin snatched it away from him said no he wanted the proper musicians autograph and proceeded without a second glance at Geldof on to Waters and Mason - the both of them had wide grins at the look of dismay on Geldofs face and the film crew were quietly chortling away. please log in to view this image still from the movie -my cousin closest the camera myself third image in
I was at that Joe Brown gig at the Odeon, if it was the one with the Vernons girls and a few others, I now wish to hell I had kept all my tickets and programmes that I have bought over the years, been great to chat mate, made my day.
****ing hell. Terry Reid is one of my heroes, as is Beefheart. One of my top ten faves is Seed of Memory... As for Beefy, there's too many to count, although you can't not love Ice Cream For Crow... As for Howlin' Wolf - man he was a singing ass!
My next door neighbour Bob - Top bloke Kurt, a cop who lives down the street - ****ing knob Jamie, lives across the street - as weird as they get. I need to play the game properly lol
Good. Monty. A gentleman. Did the stadium tour a while back when my old fella was first diagnosed with dementia, bit of a Christmas present for him. Anyway he was on Carlisle's books when he played football, Bobby Gurney signed him up and i mentioned this to Monty. **** me, he spent ages talking to my old fella and the rest of the tour weren't too happy, but i'll always remember that. I've also spoke to him several times in Quinn's Bar and he comes across very well, typical mackem really. Also see reasons below. Jackie Charlton, never really liked him to be honest but was at the BA check in desk in Newcastle and he was at the next desk, just said good morning etc, turned out we were sat next to each other on the plane. I changed my opinion of him as he was a real nice guy. Charlie Hurley, used to live next to my grandad and always signed me autographs when i was a nipper even when i told him i was flogging them to my mates at school. Always had time to talk as well. Nice bloke. Also best defender never to play for England. Bad, Peter Beardsley, miserable twat and just got blanked off him when i said good morning. Geordie ****er. John Fashenu. Met him in Lagos in the Sheraton, sat and had a drink with him and a few mates, what a ****ing self righteous ****er. Jim Davidson. Although i never met him myself, my wife used to work in Bunkers bar at George washy golf course. They had a celebrity pro-am charity event on and he was there as was Monty. Anyway, he got pissed and got louder and louder swearing all the time and getting generally abusive the drunker he got. He tried to be a smart arse when someone piped up that there were ladies in the room ( meaning my missus) he just said '**** her, she shouldn't be listening anyway, who the **** is she?' my missus said Monty tore into him and told him what a ****er he was etc. He stormed off after that.
Met Charlie Hurley and Billy Elliot a few years back two great SAFC die hards and they like Monty are an absoloute credit to the game. I have crossed paths with Monty many times the first being when we were both still at school and the last about five years ago all this time he has never changed,a great lad is Jim. Have to agree with those who dont rate Cram and I would add Benno, Rowell, Kerr and Teuart to this short list as total plonkers
