Interesting use of the guitar too, in terms of non-rhythmical riffs and sound effects. Bit like Taxman, Shakespeare's Sister, Edwyn Collins, etc. Think the lyrics are not the strongest point except to portray someone reaching a crescendo in a sexual frenzy, in which case their gobbledegook in quite apt.
Do you like ABBA, btw? I loathed them as a kid (apart from the tunes - they were good). but when my daughter was growing up she took to them big style. Subsequently I had to listen to them on car journeys and when she had her music blasting out on 'Study' evenings, and do you know what? The lyrics to Knowing Me, Knowing You, and The Winner Takes It All (especially) are...er very, very deep. Then again, people play a lot of Dylan's stuff and they haven't got a ****ing scooby what he's talking about. Hence I say, Edward Lear is the greatest poet of all time - runcible nonsense that doesn't pretend to be anything else.
That staccato guitar jab was a trademark of Steve Miller at the time and the improved production (and reproduction equipment) made it stand out. I like quite a lot of his stuff - it's just that that one strays a bit too much into adolescent cock-rock territory for me.
Nobody is allowed to say they like ABBA and live. I respect anyone who is good at what they do, even if it's a genre that I don't like. Even an average musician like me learns to appreciate the quality of songwriting beyond the "where I was when I first heard this" level of many consumers. Just by trying to play something you learn so much about the art. Even the simplest Beatles songs are incredibly well-crafted. ABBA... Benny and Bjorn wrote perfect pop songs and deserve credit for that. A handful of them rose above the genre to become more significant - the two you mentioned being quite heart-wrenching given their autobiographical nature. A band I played in covered a number of Dylan songs and I never really knew what the hell he was on about either.
