Sunderland travel to Millwall in the Sky Bet Championship. Last time out Sunderland drew with Fulham and Millwall beat Cardiff. Sunderland striker Ross Stewart was carried off the pitch after suffering an Achilles injury as Sunderland drew 1-1 at Fulham in the FA Cup and is now out for the rest of the season. New signings joe Anderson, Isaac Lihadji & Pierre Ekwah could be included in the squad with new striker Joffy Gelhardt highly likely to make his debut in place of Ross Stewart. Luke O’Nien is suspended for this game, Embleton, Stewart, Evans and Gooch are not available due to injury. Millwall will hold its annual 'Memorial Day'. The day will see The Lions honour all supporters sadly lost in 2022 by way of a minute's applause, plus their name on the big screen. The Lions signed midfielder Duncan Watmore from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee. The 28-year-old has scored five goals in 23. Watmore joined Sunderland in 2013 and made 87 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring eight goals in all competitions. Millwall are eighth in the Championship table and have won three of their past five games. Tony Mowbray: "A team of kids came to a team that are flying in the Premier League and gave a good account of themselves," said Mowbray. "I am proud. They beat Chelsea here a couple of weeks ago. Our number nine went off. If Ross [Stewart] stayed on the pitch there is a fair chance some of those chances would have fallen to him and he would have finished them. We created some amazing chances." Gary Rowett: “At the moment, I think we’re alright, I don’t think there are too many not training, It’s more or less Tyler and Aidomo are the ones that are out. “Tyler has had quite a slow return, but it was a decent injury at the time. I think the plan was that he would have a six-to-eight week injury. It was never a quick one, so we’ll try to nurse him back in the right way and hopefully he’ll be stronger for it. “Murray has been back in training for a few days I think that not having a game has helped that, and that’s it. “He had a cut on the top of his foot that got infected. That’s cleared up now with antibiotics, he’s feeling better and that’ll hopefully be that.” Match Appointments: Referee: THOMAS BRAMALL Assistant Referees: Derek Eaton and Steven Meredith Fourth Official: Tom Nield Team Lineups: Sunderland AFC: (4-2-3-1) Patterson, Alese, Batth, Ballard, Hume, Michut Neil, Omad, Clarke, Roberts, Gelhardt Subs: Bass, Cirkin, Huggins, Ba, Bennette, Ekwah, Pritchard Injured: Embleton, Stewart, Evans, Gooch Suspended: O’Nien Millwall (4-2-3-1) Long, McNamara, Hutchinson, Cooper, Styles, Mitchell, Saville, Honeyman, Flemming, Bennett, Bradshaw. Hopefully the new players get a chance to impress and we don’t pick up any more serious injuries. A debut goal from Gelhardt would be ideal. Millwall have a good home record against us and even though we beat them a few months ago, this will be a tough game. We haven’t won there since 1995. I’m going for a 1-0 away win. Yesssssss RTB laaadddd. Back to business after all that transfer window nonsense. 1-2 to the lads,I agree with a Gelhardt goal on his debut. Roberts with the other one for us.
Tough game but we’ve been playing quite well recently. Wouldn’t be disappointed with a point here but I know we can win it. Ha’way the lads!
3 - 0 to the lads with Gelhardt scoring hat trick on debut......cue thousands of nay sayers jumping off the Wear Bridge as they thought our season has finished.....haway the lads........another Fulham performance for me......Rigg to come on and make big impact!!! What a time to support the lads....total football
I know we're all supposed to be in despair about our injuries, etc but I'm really looking forward to this game. The young lads look absolutely fearless and will be chomping at the bit to get on the pitch and show what they can do again . After sitting around in various reserve teams it must be incredible to play in front of our excellent support and hear themselves praised on MOTD erc. Gelhardt will be fired up and they'll create a few chances for him ... just keep cool and finish son, we're all behind you. Sold out support and few, if any, spare tickets although I'll try to help if anyone's desperate. The George , Borough High Street, London Bridge is sure to have some of our lot in and where we went last time. Are you going today RTB?
I’m meeting a pal at the Brick Brewery Tap Room, Peckham Rye, before the match. It’s about 5 mins to South Bermondsey & the New Den from there….. …. If anyone interested / in that area.
These don't concede many at home and are a big team physically so we need to be careful giving away cheap free kicks etc. TM will have the lads fired up again and whilst a point wouldn't be a bad result I've a feeling we could nick this 0-1 or 1-2. Thanks RTB and HTL.
Great chance to get above them tbh. They did well at the SOL until we scored then they lost the plot. I always feel we'll make chances ... ... just need to be cool in front of goal. Simms used to drive me mad, he'd always shoot even when he had defenders in front of him or the angle was too tight. We need to be clever enough to make an extra pass if we have to. Clarke, Roberts, Amad, etc, will terrorise any defence and Geldhart needs to take advantage. I'd guess he can hit a ball more cleanly than either Stewart or Simms.
Millwall are strong at home and don't concede many. I'm going for 1-1 Early Geldhart goal then a 2nd half equaliser for them
RTB Provided we are not as profligate with our scoring chances as we were last time we played a London club (Fulham last week), I can see us winning this, young Leeds lad leading the line, will hopefully be busting to score. Would love it, if I am wrong again... and not bringing in a couple of strikers in January doesn't hurt us for the rest of the season.
Awesome post. Almost exactly my thoughts (except can’t go to the game as I’m gigging!). Ha’way the lads
I reckon Geldhart will do well and make a few of the fanny's crying we haven't got any strikers eat their word, hopefully he starts against these. Yeah we could have done with another to give us another striker but we are not completely lacking. From what I have read and heard about this lad he will thrive in a team that creates chances!
Hope you’re right. Knowing some of our idiot fans, he’ll miss a 30 yard screamer and get slated and that will be the end for them!!
