    A fascinating statistical fluke has been highlighted on ITTV by Reams, which could lead to the possibility of an extra fixture being required between Charlton and Plymouth to decide which team finishes this season in 6th place.

    If Charlton lose 4-0 against Rochdale and Plymouth win 0-2 away at Gillingham, the statistics for this season for Charlton and Plymouth will be exactly the same;

    Points ... 71
    Won ... 20
    Drawn ... 11
    Lost ... 15
    Goals for ... 58
    Goals against ... 54

    Even Charlton & Plymouth's results against each other are identical. Each has a 2-0 home win over the other.
    In those circumstances there are no other statistics that I am aware of that could be used to separate the two teams, so in theory a "play-off" fixture would be needed - presumably at a neutral ground - in order to decide which team finishes in 6th place.

    Putting aside how unlikely it is that Charlton will be defeated 4-0 by Rochdale, does any member here know if there is another method that the EFL might use to decide which team should finish in 6th place besides the stats I have already shown here?

    If not, then I cannot see another means to decide who finishes 6th than an extra match between them.
    I would imagine neither side would accept the crucial matter being decided in an old-fashioned manner like tossing a coin.

    C comes before P in the alphabet... it's tenuous, but I'd take it!!

    @lardiman

    I think the first line of your above post is an oxymoron.

    The words "fascinating" and "Reams" should never appear in the same sentence... UNLESS....

    "Reams has a fascinating ability to flip flop about Duchatelet. and to ponce tickets off the discredited Richard Murray"

    Given we are currently better placed tan Plymouth, I imagine they would probably take an extra game if it offers the chance to get into the play offs, while for us, it's an instant shot in the foot before starting (mind you, if we lose 4-0 at Rochdale, we probably deserve the punishment.
    Exciting for the neutrals, but a pain in the ass for ourselves and Sensible Greeny.

    Possibly right AllHell, it would have to be somewhere middle ground geographically. Somewhere in the West Midlands as well.

    Fairly sure the draw straws... and one country qualified for a WC on this basis.

    You aren't taking this possibility seriously are you. I have bet my grandchildren on this actually happening. This is a win win situation as if it comes off we will of course win the decider and if it doesn't then it will save me a fortune in crisps and fizzy drinks everytime they come near my house. I'm not actually sure which of the two I favour.

    Crack Addick is right of course with his alphabet theory. I am impressed one of you could work that out. If it was week one of the season you would be many places above us in the league even if it only lasted the first 10 minutes. We have an ex Argyle player as manager of Rochdale. They have invited Jesus down for the weekend. brb has guaranteed us a 7 goal difference. The prospect of a drawn statistical season is therefore obsolete. What could possibly go wrong for us as we have all bases covered. We are also sending our Ultra to your match to disrupt it as best as possible. If you meet a spotty youth called Timothy then don't be fooled by his appearance. He says he's very hard.

    Must sign off now as have got the ironing to do.

    Somebody on ITTV also said that in the event of a tie Charlton would take 6th place simply because the first letter of our Club's name comes earlier in the Alphabet than yours. At the beginning of the season when there are no games played Alphabetically is an obvious way to list the teams, but it does not mean anything beyond that.

    I can see the common sense in drawing lots or flipping a coin - it is a quick and cheap way of deciding the matter, if very galling for the loser. But personally I would not want Charlton to qualify for the play-offs at Plymouth's expense just because of what letter our Club's name begins with.

    I have seen that plans have been put in place for the game to be played this Monday should this outcome arise.

    You are quite right Lardi <ok> alphabetically would be madness.... it should be done on 'Top Trumps' and the first selection should be size of stadium :) ... The Valley holds 27,111 what is the capacity of Home Park @sensiblegreeny ?

    Seriously?
    There would not be adequate time to sell tickets for it except at the turnstiles, and where would the match be played?
    Thousands of fans from both sides descending on a neutral stadium all needing to buy tickets an hour or two before kick-off would be a recipe for chaos. Also transport on a bank holiday is potentially a big problem.
    Would the police be able to deal with the public safety requirements? Or would the game be played behind closed doors?

    It is from the Standard Lardi .... the standards of which have dropped massively since Osbourne took over as editor so who knows if there is any truth in it?

    As long as those Top Trump cards don't include average home attendance as a proportion of stadium capacity.
    We might come unstuck on that one compared to Plymouth...<whistle>

    Ahh but that's where the Belgian's cunning plan of declaring attendances of 5,000 over the actual attendance comes in <whistle> who called the Douche stupid? He just plans long term..

    It has to be then to accommodate the play-off games.

    The ground would have to be opened earlier as everything would be pay on the day.
