If we take the most memorable match of that Keegan period, ie the 4-3 vs Liverpool, the defence was Watson/Howey/Albert/Beresford .... .that's kinda how the defence was with Darren Peacock and Warren Barton also featuring. Id definitely take the current defense over this, its too attack minded, with Albert and Beresford wanting to get forward, and Howey being injury prone. I always thought Steve Watson was excellent for us though, and letting him go was a big mistake . The current central defense of Schar/Lejeurne/Laecelles looks much tougher and less likely to conceed than the the Keegan one.
That's partly down to coaching as opposed to personnel to be honest. If you'd given Rafa Keegans back four I think they'd have been talented enough to do a pretty good job. Say it quietly the defence was actually pretty good back then. If you look at our record of goals conceded we were pretty good - mainly because we had the ball a lot though and were always on the front foot. Keegan set his teams up to score goals. Rafa sets his teams up to not concede any. Defences will be affected accordingly. Albert would be a majestic defender in any era and for me would be the first name on the sheet out of all those you mentioned. He was just a supremely talented individual and to be honest if he'd had Rafa reining in his instinct just a touch, he would have had an even more impressive career.
This is all very well. I agree we can get better but what doesn't seem to be getting any thought at the moment is that the summer is passing rapidly and currently we have a bunch of our first team either 'exploring their options' or gone back to their parent club and precisely no word of any incomings or light at the end of this takeover saga. Right now we can't let anyone leave otherwise we are totally fooked.
I'd rather keep Yedlin as back up than Manquillo, but regardless we need a new right wing back. Preferably one who can actually pass and also has some sort of understanding of positional sense. The current two are fairly obvious weaknesses in our current squad.
Would it not be best to make sure we get the left wing back first? I reckon Ritchie can be used as first choice right wing back in the interim.
What about Man Utd's £25mil-£50 million approach for Longstaff? He looked decent, but for such limited time on the pitch before a lengthy injury lay-off. I think they are spending a lot of money on finalising their mediocrity with their summer so far.
No, just wait, they’re almost ready. They are employing Pardew to prepare their bids. He’ll get there soon. Just have a bit of patience.
