I've been out in the North Sea all week on Snorre A and my wife has been working up in the Arctic, so we're spending it inside at home with the children playing board games, reading books, cooking, TV etc. whilst heavy rain hammers the house... Not the most exciting, but welcome after the past few weeks.
Day in York with the missus. Breakfast in Carluccios. Lovely pint of Yorkshire Dark ( bit expensive tho) in the York Ale House near the Shambles. Couple more in the Cosy Café ( and it was with Northern Soul and Tamla Motown playing in the background) down Fossgate and then tret myself to some rather expensive leather boots from Clarksons Menswear on Little Petersgate near the Minister. Impulse buy but I'm a sucker for old fashioned shops with good old fashioned service and real ale. Fish and chips from Frydays in Cottingham. Didn't even notice we were in the eye of Storm Dennis or what ever. Its grim up North you know.
Went down Newland Ave, got a sausage roll from Maddisons, a beer in Larkins, went home fell asleep on the couch for an hour. Had Beef Stroganoff for tea. This is Facebook isn't it?
I’d be a sucker for a shop that sold real ale too! Seriously though I know what you mean. You know you can get stuff cheaper online, but if you’ve been dealing with someone in person, who has treated you properly then I tend to buy from them regardless. We’ll miss those shops when it’s all just a sea of self service pick up points for your online purchases instead. Bought some gloves from a shop in Beverley (can’t remember the name, but was facing the bandstand thing in that row) Was like stepping back in time. Loads of drawers with the gloves all separate in proper sizes (not S, M, L etc) and they were just really helpful. Glance at my hands and he had the size assessed correctly anyway. Nice place. Nice gloves.
Storm Dennis sure turned up at the flamingo land stadium The ball had a mind of its own swerving all over the place especially with Bamber Bridge playing big boot up field game Can your storm come back every home game at scarbough Dennis ?
??? http://www.hu17.net/2009/07/14/streffords-menwear/ No online presence either, didn't realise you'd become a farmer...
That’s the one. I own a fine array of tweed anyway, so didn’t need to purchase more farmers clothes, but it was a great glove shopping experience
If you're ever round these parts, this is the place to go. Classic clothes, shoes and even a short back and sides and 'something for the weekend sir?'. https://www.walters-oxford.co.uk/
Couldn’t agree more about clothes shopping The stuff I’ve bought on line and it goes straight back xxxxl my arse.
Ha, I only heard about that place long after I'd left Hull. For any Hull historians/general interest, there are Hull men buried up in Svalbard from the early 17th century, who were involved in the initial whaling industry and the race against the Netherlands and Danes to secure the best fishing/whaling rights. The UK ended up getting the southerly areas between Bellsund and Hornsund. The industry ended there by the end of the 18th century as climate cooling meant that ice flow preventing continuation of whaling in the region. Can't imagine it was the most comfortable of lives up there back then.
