A few weeks ago someone on one of the threads on this message board said that there should be a cull of all people over 70. Whether he believed it or it was meant to be a joke I don't know but what I do know is that what he wished for is about to happen. As someone who is well over the age of 70 and with several chronic health problems I sat with some friends last night who are in a similar position and we all expressed our concern that we do not have a Government that is fit for purpose to manage this very serious health crisis. It has become apparent over the last few weeks that Johnson is not coping and he has been stupid enough to appoint incompetent sycophants to the most important offices of state on top of which we have a control freak who is the driver of government policy who is busy undermining and damaging the very Civil Service infrastructure that we need to manage us through this health crisis. All those foolish people who voted for Brexit and then voted Tory thus giving Johnson and his cronies unprecedented power will soon be mourning some very precious loved ones. I am not sure I should worry about this at all for as things stand the probability is that I wont be around to see the consequences. I am going to have some very sad children and grandchildren, I hope that you don't.

 

I see Priti Patel has history of bullying with a previous victim attempting to commit suicide and receiving a £25k pay off.
Unfortunately Patel is just one bully of many masquerading as politicians, most of whom represent the Conservative party.

My wish? I never once stated it was my wish, it was a tongue in cheek comment on the E&P thread about the size of worlds population being one of the biggest issues regarding climate change (which is true btw).


I would appreciate it if you didn't twist my comments for the sake of pushing your hyperbolic political agenda please.

 

Greggs have committed to paying staff their contract hours, and not just sick pay, should they have to self isolate.
It would be good if other companies followed suit.

Footnote, I haven’t seen any news , so maybe others have committed to this, with the government sponsoring it, which would be a really good idea. And yes I know some would abuse it, but common sense says stay at home if you suspect that you may have it and don’t be forced to go to work because you can’t afford to be short paid.

 

Sports Direct has already confirmed, those that turn up to work will be paid sick pay & forced to carry on while everyone else asking for anything else can please confirm their death in a timely manner.

Picking up on the comment about The Guardian newspaper, I have got to admit that I think it is a terrible newspaper but think that it probably has far more influence than it deserves. It is noticeable that whenever Radio 4 pulls in a journalist for comment, they inevitably chose someone from The Guardian. This was pointed out to my last year when I believe the editor of or journalist from The Morning Star made an observation that their paper had been invited to comment on a news item by the BB on a ridiculously low number of occasions in 2018. It was less than a handful.

It think it is salient to note that The Guardian often prides itself on being "right on" and having a generally "Left wing" bias. In my opinion, the politics in this paper does tend to mirror some aspects of the BBC and the two tend to serve as something of an echo chamber to each other. However, I always understood that the readership of this paper had been in long term decline. I am not sure that this decline has been arrested. I tend to read quite a few different newspaper / sites during the week and I think it needs to be pointed out that whilst most of the papers and especially the tabloids have a Right wing agenda, there are other papers on the Left such as The Mirror and The Morning Star, with the latter likely to ask far more fundamental questions than overtly PC Guardian. The Guardian always seems very pleased with itself and it unquestionably a newspaper aimed at the more "worthy" end of the middle classes. For the sake of balance, I think that The Morning Star is extremely underrepresented both in the media as a whole and in general readership which may be a reflection upon the newspaper's radical origins.

I would also say that it is newspapers like The Guardian who have beat the drum for the failed New-Liberal causes for a long while which has effectively assisted in a political drift towards the Right. For all it's "radical" intentions, I feel the kind of politics exposed by papers like The Guardian are part of the problem with the politic system at the moment, the more radical and left wing ideas being hijacked by a comfortable middle class which has largely contributed to working class voters choosing UKIP and The Brexit Party as well as voting to Brexit. I do not see The Guardian as part of any solution to redress the balance and see it very much as part of the problem. It is a shame that the Morning Star is really low down the pecking order of newspapers as, if you are looking for a political perspective from the Left, this newspaper does a better job. I would also ague that papers like The Telegraph similarly make a better first of arguing from the opposite perspective than the ridiculous positions taken by papers like The Mail, The Sun and The Express which cannot be taken seriously.
