Their original actions have caused havoc and misery around the world. The Chinese communist Party's secretive oppressive political set up was a major factor in the cause of this virus spreading so badly. Any subsequent actions to limit the vast number of deaths pales into insignificance by the damage it have caused.
This is all about judgement, and we have heard the last health secretary raising doubts about how some of the advice being given out has been arrived at. This evening the French government has said all schools will be closed from next Monday, and over 70s should stay at home as much as possible. That is the judgement of what you do according to the medical advice here, and it seems good advice to me. The fact that the UK government thinks differently, although Scotland has its own advice and has chosen a different route, doesn't mean that others are right or wrong. This whole thread has been about people looking at information from around the world and forming an opinion. To simply say that because the government says something it must be right and no one should question it shows a blind faith, and people with blind faith get taken for a ride.
I am not holding the Chinese government up as a model SH. I am saying that those of their methods which have been successfull we should look at and learn from - the same applies to South Korea - in their case more so because their size and infrastructure is more similar to that of eg. Germany. In both cases they started off with large numbers of cases which they have steadily reduced and have brought the peak behind them - you cannot argue with a statistic which shows that China has had 80,000 cases and now has only about 15-20 new cases every day and has brought the number of active cases down to 14,000 - I would not care if the devil himself had produced such a result I would still be prepared to learn from it. However - China is a special case - with 1.4 Billion people to protect and 100 cities with over a million population their methods were always going to be a bit robust and over military. South Korea is the country I was most thinking of when I wrote the original text.

Another aspect of this which the crisis has shown up is how outsourcing has placed us at the mercy of developments in China. Many Germans were not aware how many of their medical products are actually produced there by Bayer. This is one branch where countries should have a certain amount of autonomy - particularly one the size of Germany. The crisis has thrown up many questions about the nature of global supply chains which the public were not aware of.
The UK government is taking advice from medical experts that happen to disagree with some others. I'm surprised you put so much store in a Labour stooge who has a different opinion from the UK's excellent Chief Medical Officer. It will be nigh on impossible to work out the exact best timing to take action so much responsibility rests on just a few shoulders. On a more positive note. My eldest daughter owns and runs a company that is a major manufacturer and supplier to the NHS in single use protective clothing, respirators, surgical drapes etc. She has provided assurances that UK hospitals are much better stocked with essential supplies than in previous recent epidemics, which thankfully failed to take hold. Obviously if the unlikely event of worst case occurrence and 80% of citizens became infected then supplies would clearly not be sufficient.
When I started a company making single use medical devices in China in 2003 the multinationals reps used to try to put hospitals off by saying our products were cheap crap made in China. We knew all of the multinationals were making their products in the same factories as ours but were lesser quality. Several years later when we had 40 % of the English NHS supply chain market some multinationals dropped out of the market because they could not compete with our policy of best quality at low prices. Although I am no longer involved other countries, such as Vietnam now compete with China. Turkey used to be the only European alternative but I doubt that it can compete with products with high labour content.
If you stopped calling a medical expert a "Labour stooge" and the current CMO "excellent' because they agree or disagree with your government, then it would make your posts seem rather more thoughtful. It is not just about supplies though is it? My daughter says that the staff she works with are already at breaking point. The numbers who have left and gone back to their country of origin is something she hasn't seen in twenty years.
Three Leicester players have gone into self isolation. I wonder if Saturday's game will be postponed?
The people at Leicester seem surprised that the game is going ahead in a full stadium. They expected the fans to be banned, or all football in England to be put on hold until next month.
Angie has just said that the Germans should try to avoid social contacts whenever possible (a lot easier for Germans than for Frenchmen or Italians !). This is the hard thing to do - because 2,500 registered cases (could be as many more unregistered) still means that only one person in about 34,000 people in Germany has it. So unless that one in 34,000 actually sneezes in front of me, or coughs at me, or hugs and kisses me I should be ok. for the time being. This is the hard thing - in epidemics we tend to look at the passer by as a potential enemy who wants to infect us - and he/she isn't. There are certain things like washing regularly, not touching too many things like shopping trollies - basically using hygiene and common sense. Hand shaking is to be avoided - the Romans actually had it right on this. The ancient Romans that is - when two men concluded a deal it was customary to seal it by holding the others genitals for a brief second - this involved an element of trust which is essential to any deal - under the present circumstances it may be more hygienic !
If 33999 people did any of these things to me I would be seriously worried. At the very least I would get a cold. If they just kissed me Mrs NZ would get seriously worried.
Wonder if we will be affected? Arsenal train next to us. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal
It is time to initially suspend and then cancel this season Three Leicester players are affected and now Arsenal almost in total isolation
The CMO Chris Whitty has been described as 'excellent' by those who have worked with him previously. The 'stooge' John Ashton has history of being politically motivated against the Conservatives. He had to face an investigation for inappropriate and offensive language in 2014 which embarrassed the WHO, his employers at the time. Self publicist.
I think you have just made my point! So what is your view on where the staff are coming from to replace those who have left. 100,000 vacancies in the NHS which no one disputes.
I have been reading comments from Watford fans elsewhere. Some are saying that they will go to the game Saturday, and others say they will not. I actually hope that the game is called off. The F1 race in Oz was pulled quickly, and I see no reason why the football program should be any different. At least the players in England have not travelled to the otherside of the world to play a game.
