The pedantic answer is that the accounts are historical and do not show what is currently happening. For me the true answer is that the scheme was rushed (as it had to be) and they probably didn’t think enough about companies abusing the system (which would be naive) and didn’t have the time to consider the likely response of all types of companies. PL clubs particularly but all professional clubs generally are extremely badly run and the economics of running a “normal” business go out of the window. One Club can win the PL but that doesn’t stop 19 other Clubs gambling their existence to either win the PL or stop in at any cost and at the same time a host of Championship Clubs gambling their existence to get in it and so on down the pyramid. What other industry follows that business plan?
Jeez, if the season does continue and Villa get relegated they will be in serious financial difficulties. This won't capture last summers transfer window will it? If not, adding that in, and the Covid-19 impact....
Just out of interest how could Spurs make so much with the cost of the new stadium? I assume that isn't included in there? So we would have been easily in 2nd place had we not signed our beloved Joey.
