Been isolating for 45 days now. Unexpected bonus; I've somehow lost 4kg. How come none of these supposed diet 'experts' have ever thought of the lay-in-bed-all-day-playing-Xbox-and-eating-ice-cream-on-toast diet before?
I should put you in touch with my danish friend, Lars. He rode his bike from Nordcapp in Norway down to Cape Agulhas at the extreme southern tip of Africa the year before last. I keep telling him to write a book about it. I’d be tempted, but don’t think I’ve got the bottle. I’ll stay here instead
It must be taking a toll St B, plenty of support here for your predicament keep up the pressure. How about your MP any chance of help there?
Just thought I'd do a plug here, my best mate hosted a PES game between Asmir Begovic and Alphonso Davies raising money for the UN refugee fund to help buy soap and preventative equipment for refugees. If anyone fancies donating to a worthy cause, every little helps: https://tiltify.com/@unhcrtheunrefugeeagency/coronavirus-support-for-refugees You can also still watch the matches between them on twitter, and they talk about their journeys from refugees to playing for AC Milan and Bayern Munich
Thanks for the support. It is getting to me, truth be told. MP is washing his hands of it and won’t even send the company an email querying their decision not to use the furlough scheme. Tosser. The woman who didn’t return my emails or phone call, sent an email, surprisingly, yesterday evening again expressing that the company doesn’t need to use it and even said that the coronavirus job retention scheme was not set up to help employees, would you believe, and that I should explore other ways of gaining money. I have just replied, explaining that I now have written confirmation from HMRC of eligibility, despite having key worker status, and whatever false excuse she might put forward for me not receiving furlough, we will both know that the truth is that they just don’t want to do it. I have also requested, again, the name of the person she is being advised by, as I can’t be sure that this isn’t being driven by the depot I work in, with head office knowing nothing about it. I have mentioned that most decent people would consider their behaviour to be equal to victimisation. My plan for tomorrow is to call head office and talk to the secretaries for the directors to obtain email addresses for prominent people who would read and consider how this would impact on company image, if it became public knowledge. My “working title” for that email is “Does the company want to kill my wife?”
I'm a fan of being diplomatic right up to the point where the other party has proven to be intransigent. And then, you go for the throat. You gave them every opportunity to do the right thing by choice; it's time that they do the right thing because it would hurt too much to do otherwise.
I've joined this discussion very late, and as such I may be well behind the times, but have you considered contacting South Today, or Meridian, or Radio Solent, with this 'local' Coronavirus story? More importantly/usefully, have you mentioned to your line managers/their line managers that you will talk to these, or any other news outlets? They may not care too much about you, but they may care considerably more for their reputation, both locally and nationally. To paraphrase someone, decency must not only be done, it must be seen to be done.
If nothing else, record every detail, save every email offline, and make sure that you have a full accounting of your efforts to seek an equitable solution. Because then, if you have to take it public, you can demonstrate that you did everything possible prior to going nuclear. And if they can't figure out where this ends, that's their problem.
I have considered it, but am giving them as much opportunity as possible to show themselves in a bad light, with the continued refusal, despite their having been told on 6th April (by me) that I was eligible for furlough under the living with someone who is shielding rule. Trying to get in touch with a director will be their last opportunity to do the right thing. If not, I will be contacting as many local news outlets as possible, and the knock on effect of that could be other workers who qualify, but don’t know it, might also start asking for it.
Seems like they're painting themselves into a corner morally and legally. I'm heading for the 'hang em out to dry' attitude, BBC/ITV, Guardian and private eye would be on my mailing list, along with employment rights campaign groups and lawyers. There must be others in similar situations, any contact with them?
I don’t think they are actually doing anything illegal, because the wording of the scheme makes it optional for employers to use it. But morally, they are bankrupt.
