Interesting that we are already only 3 points off 46 - the number of points Puel achieved whilst finishing 8th. 46 points this year will likely be a 14th placed finish
I’m so impressed with how Stephens has developed. When he came in under puel I only ever thought he would be a make weight, but he looks a leader in defence. And composed on the ball looking to move forward. Well done Che, so happy for him. Was great seeing him and Ings celebrate.
To finish 8th this year, we almost certainly need to win all five (ie 58 points, with a poor-ish GD). I'd be very surprised if 56 or lower was enough. A very different scenario to that Puel season. How on earth we finished 8th that season, I'll never quite know.
Well, 1-0 has to be the most unlikely outcome from that game, could have been 3-4 on another day and I didnt believe it till the final whistle. That freekick at the end would have gone in earlier in the season, our turnaround is complete. Solid. Can't say anything better than that. Well done Ralph he's built a bloody solid team. Now we need a bit of depth so we can bring on DeBruyne and Foden in the second half
At least we were not last. Worth the wait though. I do think that there ought to be a ban on mentioning the Leicester score back in October!
Every time they mention the 9-0, I think they should be obliged to follow it up with how we went up there and beat them. They took 3 pts from us, we took 3 pts from them, we didn't need to score 9 because we are more efficient. Can we please put it to bed now. I don't remember Sunderland getting blasted every week for conceding eight! (they beat us in the reverse fixture as well!)
Most of the PL was uncompetitive, and we were just a shade better than they were. Turn one win into a draw and we'd have dropped to 11th; turn it into a loss and we finish 13th. The reverse is true at the moment: the league is extremely competitive, and we're toward the back of a long train of closely-packed teams. Despite the 9-0, and despite the bad early-season results, I'd take this team over the '16-'17 iteration.
So, competing my cricket analogy ... that was like their star batsman gets a golden duck and your bowler who hasn’t taken a wicket since the old king died, suddenly turns in a 19 wicket performance God how have I lived through six decades of supporting this lot? I suppose it’s for moments like that
Nice stat coutesy of the BBC match report... Southampton have won 11 points against 'big six' sides in the league this season - only Wolves (12) have won more outside of those 'big six' sides

That’s why it was never that relevant when people were shocked that we sacked Puel despite finishing 8th. That 8th was not really a relevant benchmark, and was painting over the cracks of a big drop off in points and quality. Anyway, I’ve not watched any of the games. But of course I still love Saints and I’m pleased to hear we’re doing so well. Great result to beat Man City, especially at home!
Now that safety is secured, there are just two other things I would like from this season: Ralph to take 4 points from the final 15 available and push past Puel's 46-point finish from 2016/17 Us to go to Dean Court and relegate Bournemouth in their final Premier League home game Too much to ask?
It's just not a question hasenhuttl is better than Puel, we don't need the points to prove it. (Although I hope we get them!) Not only has he turned the us into a good PL side, he has got the fans on board. You can guarantee he would have played Fonte in the europa league, for a start. The comparisons to klopp make sense - he knows how it feels to be a fan. We are so very lucky to have him. Legend.
