This just highlights why the decision to give a free kick was so bad. No way could the ref have seen if a foul had been committed (it hadn’t) because he was trying to look through Bednarek. It was a poor guess that could have changed the result.
From the film South Pacific: "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" (originally by William Tabbert) You've got to be taught to hate and fear You've got to be taught from year to year It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught You've got to be taught to be afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade You've got to be carefully taught You've got to be taught before it's too late Before you are six or seven or eight To hate all the people your relatives hate You've got to be carefully taught You've got to be carefully taught
Too many refs rely on guesswork. I remember even Michael Oliver giving a handball a couple of years ago which he had no way of actually seeing.
Our eyes are only receptors...our brain interprets what it sees....and that is influenced by experience. Often a person is not attempting to deceive when he/she claims to see something...the brain has just worked something out based on likelihood.
