I would agree but the problem is we knew that that midfield was poor and I know that we have injuries in that department, but if that midfield is selected again, it will result in the same kind of performance, Massengo is woefully out of his depth and has been since the turn of the year and Wiemann is not a midfielder. The 2 substitutions finally proved if the ball is held up better by our target man instead of coming straight back (like it did for an hour and did against Exeter and most of the restart games) and we have a strong willing SPECIALIST midfielder, Paterson can fully express himself which he did in the last 30 minutes and boy did he look a danger, take his goal out of the first equation and Paterson was a bad as Massengo and Wiemann in the first half. The starting midfield was weak and everybody knows that, let's hope Holden realises that now.
It's hard to argue with any of this. I hate to single a player out but I've said before that I can't see why Massengo is so highly rated. Paterson for me is ALMOST.brilliant. I wonder if LJ saw glimpses of this and that was why he persisted in picking him. I'm looking forward to seeing Williams play - I think he might change the dynamic for the better, but in the meantime DH can only select from who's fit and available.
Nope, 2 games in and a big fat Zero in the goals scored column, unbelievable with the brilliant Kieffer Moore in their side
I agree, we have a player in Bakinson who showed today that until Williams and Walsh are fit is hopefully capable of doing a far better job than Massengo and I suspect that Morrell can probably do a better job than Weimann in midfield and allow Paterson the freedom to be Paterson. I suspect Martin for Diedhiou will improve us as well, that is my opinion from today. I agree about your comments about fitness and team selection, but Massengo and Weimann in midfield were poor against Exeter, Bakinson has looked good in all pre season games.
The few games iv'e seen I don't think Massengo offers anything at all, gets knocked off the ball too easily. Doesn't impose himself on the game, when he starts we always look weak in midfield.
Arrived last night having a week away in a cottage in deepest Buckinghamshire (Great Missenden) and sought consolation in a Peroni or five this afternoon during and after that lot. I watched the game on CCFC TV and wished I hadn't. Dreadful performance to the extent that I'm tempted to say it can't get any worse. Then I thought about that for a minute and had a few more Peronis to make it go away. Just finished a fish supper and logged on to see you lot having a go - I realised it could get much, much worse.....
I think we were fortunate to win. Massengo reacted late on their goal, their guy just runs past him. I noticed it in the 2nd half as well. Hard to pick on a youngster but he's not a Championship midfielder, well certainly not yet and Tbf I think in that set up he was hung out to dry. The sooner the 'new guys' get fit the better.
If we play the starting eleven yesterday every week we will struggle, we won’t though as yesterday was dictated by injury and availability, both the back four and midfield were weak in my view Zac and Taylor Moore starting together are lacking experience at championship level , whilst the midfield hardly had a tackle between them. It will be interesting to see the line up when all are fit and available .
Spot on I think Mawson has to replace Vyner, to give us more experience in the back 3. The starting midfield was shocking, as I have already said Massengo would IMHO benefit from a loan away and Weimann is not a midfielder, I truly hope hope he is not a Holden undroppable, I see him as a bench impact player. I think if they were going to sign Diedhiou and Eliasson would have done so by now and I suspect time might be up for Palmer, if they all move on only Diedhiou will need some form of replacement.
We were fortunate, however the substitutions could not have worked better and to be fair after those substitutions we looked like the team who might go on to win. Massengo was caught out, he was ambling back and never picked up the midfield runner, to be honest if hadn't of been him it could have been one of the other 2. But I have to say the attempted clearance by Vyner was incredibly weak. Yes he has been hung to dry firstly by Johnson who over used him in a serially failing midfield and now by Holden who got lucky with his double substitution, hopefully a lesson learned, the evidence was there from the Exeter game. The kid needs a break and maybe a loan away.
I only saw the highlights on Sky and it looked like Massengo spent most of the time chasing the ball and not doing anything with it on the rare occasion he actually had lt. I thought we looked weak, both in midfield and in defence but Bentley pulled off some great saves. If I were a Coventry fan I'd have been disappointed to have not taken at least a point from the game. But a winning start is still a great feeling compared to recent years.
I agree, Massengo has no place in this side, why wasn't Morrell in, he played twice for Wales last week, so must be fit enough? Once again Fammy was more use in our box than the opposition, maybe DH should convert him to CB. Their goal was sloppy, yet another lame attempt at a clearance from our defence, what is the current obsession with sticking a leg out and trying to knock the ball clear? I've yet to see anyone do it decently, get your body in a position to clear the damn ball with conviction! Knock it behind for a corner, rather than what Vyner did, it's poor coaching or player awareness.
It is poor coaching indeed, I have been saying that for years, hopefully the new coaches will address what has been lacking. Bentley for instance always pushes the ball back from whence it came, instead of trying to push it away. And don't get me started on the coaching of Diedhiou.
It’s not just our defence, it’s a modern footballer issue, look at Van Dyke against Leeds, the same thing. I think Diedhiou is past the point of coaching changing him tbh. If he can’t control the ball decently at his age now, he never will. I implore Dijon to come and sign him, maybe he’ll cut the mustard there..... Move him on and get another striker to challenge Martin and Wells, perhaps we could entice Adobe back?
