VAR is not so much the problem as the rule changes. The handball rule is bizarre. It should be intentional handball only. Defenders have to run around like they’re performing in Riverdance - it’s absurd. It was only recently that the offside rule gave the advantage to the attacker; there had to be “clear daylight “ to be offside. Now we have this utter nonsense of freezing the TV images at the exact frame where it may or may not show a toenail offside. That’s always going to bring the game into disrepute because it’s so subjective and so arbitrary- it’s always going to leave a sour taste for the team on the wrong side of such a ridiculously marginal decision.
Yeah the penalty thing was funny for a while but that joke's run its course. We'll just forget the 17 assists this season though.
This is why it's aggravating: just as players get used to how a rule works, it gets changed so they have to relearn it over the course of another season Rinse, repeat
You know that winning a penalty or a free kick counts as an assist, right? How many assists would he get from Kane or Dier on FK duty?
Why would you introduce video technology, so you can analyse handballs in the box properly, then change the rule so it doesn't matter any more? It's lunacy. Nobody was even complaining about it, barring City fans and you can ignore both of them.
It was the interpretation of the rule because players are not stood upright when they play- some are leaning forward, some are back on their heels. It’s artificial to freeze images at a certain point and deem offside because a player’s afro was blowing east to west in the wind yet the defender was bald.
This 100% In almost a single act you'd almost remove every allegation or feeling of bias - whether right or wrong. and we'd never have to suffer Oliver et al.. .
The shameful collapse during this season, IMHO, is a result of the failure to strengthen at the end of the 2018-2019 season. Had Spurs built on top of that relative success, during the summer of 2019, things would be so much different now. That failure was later compounded by sacking one of the most appropriate managers this club has seen over recent times. Wallowing in mid table again for two/three years, with our brand new shiny, empty stadium (looking splendid) is a real possibility now. Those fans who have falling foul of that taunts to win cups and trophies will have to wait quite awhile longer for the chance. I remember being happy just to watch good football. The boat has sailed.
Perhaps I misunderstood your terminology: to me daylight means the players outlines are not overlapping at all.
To be fair I'm excited at our chances in the Europa Conference League next season... If we even manage to qualify for it
Two years ago today we completed one of the greatest comebacks in CL history. The extent to which we have decayed since that day is staggering.
I don't think you get the assist if you score the free kick or penalty that you won. Seeing he takes all the pens and free kicks they won't be part of his assist tally
