One of the most ridiculous posts ever.. Burke out the door is a positive... oh my ****ing lord some people should not be let out alone... him and greaves will be two of the best centre back partnerships in the championship, you heard it here first

Surely we wouldn't be negotiating a new contract with Burke if we wanted rid of him?

Anyone is for sale if silly money is offered, but I don't think silly money is available apart from PREM top 4/6 and they will get the top experienced players

Getting rid of Burke would be a dumb move. He is a regular in a title winning side and has a good partnership with Greaves. He has shown loyalty in the past so it would have to be a very good offer that prompted him to try his hand somewhere higher. Could be agent talk again.

I think he'd be back up next season, I prefer Alfie and I assume Reece must be one of the higher earners (it was a bit of a coup when we signed him).

He had a good season, but he's slow to react and I found it interesting a Burton (I think it was them) fan did an in-depth opposition analysis and went into a bit of detail about our defence and Burke was the one highlighted.

I don't mind if he stays, it would be one less to bring in, but if we have aspirations of a top-half finish then I feel like we need better. I'd also like a defender with a bit of physicality. But Reece is okay, not sure he's been as good as we hoped but that's life.

I was both surprised & not that we didn't trigger his option, I assume we've offered him a contract on less money, otherwise, it makes no sense to not take up the option.

I don't mind us selling Wilkes, as long as we keep Wilks.

If he's that good, why did we not take up the option in his contract? That would've given us another year to negotiate a longer deal if we so wish. As of now, he's a free agent and we know that players don't re-sign with us when we don't trigger year options.

Exactly the same situation with Long, could have triggered the option, we didn't. He's now gone elsewhere. So despite saying we're in negotiations, we clearly aren't that bothered about keeping him as you don't let him go on the open market.

It's quite obvious we didn't trigger Long or Burke's extensions, as we've tried to get them on reduced terms, which will probably mean they'll both go.

Triggering the extra year for Magennis made sense, he won't be on a fortune and he finished the season well, it's a good chance to see how he performs in the Championship before making a more long term decision.

Jones looks like a disaster to me, you'd only trigger that year if you thought he wasn't going to sign a new long term deal and I think he'll be gone at the end of the season, which will be both disappointing and costly.

When reading that about Jones (A), I assumed it would mean that the club will likely try to negotiate a new contract for him during this coming season, say half way through. I do though fear the worst and we end up losing him (and probably for nothing). He's a player.

    Like Bowen, Maguire, Robertson, .......
Not saying Wilks will be the next, but we just don't know (given the opportunity, coaching, being around other top class players, etc etc).
I would love to see him stay, and I honestly think that is why 'our' paradigm is "he'd be better of for a couple more seasons in CCC, L1, wherever". Sorry, but it's not true.

Maguire and Robertson had already played in the Championship and the PL. Bowen had played a significant number of games in the Championship. Wilks hasn’t proven himself in anything other than league one. That’s a great difference.

Jones has shown his true flexibility .. I prefer him in the holding midfield role personally and they'd be batsh1t crazy not to look to tie him down to a longer deal. As for Burke .. alongside Greaves you could see his experience helping the lad .. again get him tied into a longer deal if we can. Long for me as other posters have said is a mistake waiting to happen so wish him well on his ventures darn scarf.

Think you've pretty much echoed what I said about the Burke situation.

Alfie has to be one of the priorities of the summer. I don't see the triggering of the option as a negative sign. If you believe what Grant said then they haven't been sorting contracts until after the Charlton game and it's only been 10 days since. I wouldn't have expected a contract to be signed so quickly plus all the lads will be trying to have some sort of break.

You can also spin not keeping Burke as clear sign that we feel that Alfie is the no. 1 choice. They both shared the minutes last season at CB. Alfie probably didn't get as many as he would've liked, especially initially. Going forwards he'll definitely want to first choice if he's going to sign a long term deal and letting Reece go would be a clear sign of that happening.

But Alfie does need to play, yes he's only got a year left but if we play hardball and don't play him until he signs (not an approach I advocate, but it worked with KLP) then in 12 months he'll be back in L1. Realistically even if he does sign, we'll struggle to keep him longer than 12 months, he's that good.

What we do know with our club is that any contract discussions incomings/outgoings will be unpredictable, and throw up a number of disappointments and surprises.
Generally speaking we got it right in the majority of instances in the last two windows, so fingers crossed.

We should have been discussing a new deal with Alfie since the start of the year.

I'd be amazed if we haven't, that's why I think I think it's bad news that we just triggered the year, it suggests no long term deal could be agreed.

I think Alfie and the club wanted to be sure of the league we where in before he committed longer term and the club triggered the year just to cover themselves before he could walk for free. A longer term deal is definitely being talked about
