I want to apologise to @VocalMinority For coming across so aggressive last night. I had this news last week but it really hit me last night and I was in a bad place. That's no excuse whatsoever though and I genuinely do apologise for some of my comments.

I won't apologise however for deciding against a second jab and really dislike some people's attitude towards this and feel we're heading towards a two tier society with this. People have freedom to make their own choices ultimately and shouldn't be chastised for doing so.

Interestingly, and having read your posts later last night, I don't actually think we're that far apart in our thoughts. I fully supported the first and the second lockdowns but feel with the majority of vulnerable vaccinated that there's no justification for it to to continue further.

I've said all through this that at some point we're going to have to learn to live with this virus while living our normal lives, and that at some point the cure will cause more harm than the disease itself. We've now passed that point imo and I won't stop being vocal about it having seen first hand the suffering restrictions have caused.

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on so much, but I'm sorry VM and hope we can move past this.

I am genuinely lost for words.

Oh dear we'll have to disagree then.

Don't display your ignorance by assuming those that err on the side of caution are "restriction loving people" who are "pleading and begging for more" and enjoying the regulations which is obviously not true and could be seen as a veiled insult:grin::grin:.

I actually think most of us are on the same page here, just different parts of the page.

The first 2-3 lockdowns, most of us agree on - deaths and infections were spiralling and mutations were happening.

We now have 76% of the population with one jab, about 60% with two.

The 'magic' number for herd immunity is around 75%

    Here's where we are.

We can open up fully on the 21st and that 60% along with the people that actually have had COVID (so in theory have the antibodies) make up the 75% and we have herd immunity and COVID is no worse than the flu.

Or, the increase in infections doesn't cause hospitalisations initially but the virus mutates (because that is what viruses do each time there is an infection). This could lead to the vaccines being ineffective and we are back to square one.

Or we stay shut up, the vaccine rollout (2 jabs) surpasses 75% and we open up later and all live happily ever after. Except we won't as there will be mutations in the UK until either the rest of the world is in herd immunity or we close the borders.

Three scenarios, none of them ideal.

The gamble is do we risk going back to square one.

IMO I would open up on the 21st and close the borders entirely. This way we have a normal life in the UK and control the virus, industry gets back to earning money for my pension pot. We screw the travel industry, but that is only one industry. All other options screw over every industry.

Different age groups and different people have different reasons for not wanting to or wanting to open up.

The most unfortunate thing is the lack of trust in the government (I am not trying to be political as it would be with any flavour of government in charge). If they say we delay by 2 weeks, we simply do not believe them as we think/know that in two weeks something else would crop up.

Close the borders and bite the bullet I say.

On the subject of the second jab, I had mine but there should be no-one forcing others to IMO. I would strongly argue to anyone who has had one to have the second, but I do get that people have different reasons for it. @Libby I think the bit yesterday that got the argument started and heated was that you said you wouldn't have it to spite the government - your prerogative, but maybe it seemed like a lame reason for not doing it. I think the arguments spiralled quickly from there.

Anyway, I am tired as I have just realised I have done probably the longest post of my posting career and I have a hot tub pump impeller to replace. Now that really is an issue :)

That's a pretty fair post all round I'd say. In terms of my not wanting the second dose, it's not so much to spite the government (though I can see how it came across like that) but more that I never wanted it in the first place.

I went against my better judgement and initial feelings to have it in the first place. And I only did so as I believed it would truly help end the lockdown. I no longer believe that to be the case so my only reason for having it doesn't exist anymore.

I had my first in January so it's well beyond the 12 weeks. Not convinced it'd make a huge difference to someone of my age and general health anyway tbh.

My daughter is the same as you in that respect - she is 31 and doesn't want the jab. She is healthy and fit and doesn't think she is at risk of serious problems. As a dad I have tried to push her towards it, but she is an adult and I can't force her. The thing is there is no wrong or right answer to it.

And that's the exactly the right way of doing it. Advise, but ultimately, you can't force another adult to do something. Everyone has a choice. Its their body and their choice. I hate all this "you must have a vaccine" preaching bollocks that people are spouting.

It is her choice which must be made with all the facts recognised. She doesn't think she is at risk of serious problems but should note the increasing number of long covid sufferers. Also being young and healthy unlikely to suffer any reactions. Many on here and elsewhere are concerned with increased infections therefore increased likelihood of mutations which may nullify vaccine protection. Somewhere between 100% lockdown and complete freedom is the responsible precautions to avoid infection of which vaccination is one. Other reasons to have the jab (along with other vaccinations many of us have had) is travel restrictions that many countries worldwide are implementing. Also travel insurance may have vaccine related conditions.

Anyway off Cloggy the clog boat for a pootle up the river Rotte. Stay safe and sane.

This is the important bit. Unfortunately for her, living in the US where life has been more or less normal throughout really doesn't help her decision
