I'd never watch this kind of Churchy stuff even if I was paid lots of money but today they are doing a new Pilgrim walk to Durham. I left Durham 2 and a half years ago and haven't been back so I'm watching with the sound turned off, they're singing bloody hymns man. The Cathedral looks wonderful now that the scaffold is down. I lived less than 2 miles from the city and every time I was there I would walk up the cobbled streets and turn the corner and just look in awe at this huge structure. Whenever family came over they would ask to be taken to the Cathedral and Castle and it was never a chore, we'd spend ages walking through the Cloisters and visiting the final resting place of Bede. They are also visiting Finchale Priory which is another place I would visit regularly. I really do love Durham and the city in particular so this is like a picture postcard from back home for me. Sorry for the rambling post but I wanted to let any ex Durham lads know this program has been shown, if anyone wants to watch it it's now on I Player. Ready for the footy now, Ha'Way the English Lads.
I went to college in Durham for 12 months. Brilliant city, virtually lived in the Dunelm, fighting cocks and the three tuns
Think I might of mentioned it but a mate of my dads down in Wales was ex navy, I think royal and merchant he spent many years traveling the world and did so in civvy street. He's been to virtually every country lol. But he told me his favourite city was Durham.
I'm Durham and very proud to be. I love the city, the county and the people, but have to admit that the Cathedral is what makes it so special ... ... we went to every Big Meeting and always walked up the hill to knock on the Great Door.
As you walk up from the river there's a fork in the road where you'd naturally turn right for the Cathedral ... ... if you've never taken the left fork try it and keep going. It's wonderful and easily missed.
I think we did try it, is the one that runs alongside the river toward the steps to Milburngate. Think we were covered in clarts!!
No it's closer to the Cathedral on the South Bailey so quite high up. It goes around the back of the Cathedral and is where the staff lived and worked, perhaps still do. It's idyllic if you're lucky enough to be there.
Oh yep I know where you mean was around that way a few weeks ago. Comes out onto Prebend Bridge. Lovely walk, took a few photos.
Hate Songs of Praise. Along with Last of the Summer Wine, Antiques Roadshow and bath night, it reminds me of school the next day.
Love the place had a great chat with Vince about it a while back, used to spend every weekend there, in my miss-spent youth, rain or shine, pub crawls nightly down to the ice rink and last bus home to Sunderland, great memories .
Sure was great times in the great city I had a good day there last Friday unfortunately at a great friends funeral Met some old mates loads or tears and pints
What about bullseye on sunday ! Mr 55P, the clothes horse in front of the fire steam coming off, Hart to hart and That's life back in the 1970's nearly 50 years ago started the comp and tried my new school uniform on remember doing that lads exiting days.
I remember the days before all the new roads and by-passes. Traffic went over Framwellgate and Elvet bridges and followed Silver street up into the market square. There were traffic-lights on the bridges operated by a guy (policeman I think) in a cabin in the market square. And there was technology! There were CCTV cameras on the bridges and approaches so he coud control the lights. Very impressive for the early 60's
Had my stag night through Durham. The advice given was do not go in the Fighting Cocks. Challenge accepted then. Anyway early on no fight but decent little boozer. The Angel up the road had some canny bands on as well on a weekend. Mind you the road to get to it should be renamed Cardiac Hill. As you say brilliant place and a few good boozers.
