I feel we should apologise for calling the 1998-99 season the Great Escape and singing the theme tune, shame on us!
Agreed , booing the anthems is a ****'s trick. Sing, boo, whistle the other team when the game starts but respect the tradition that has existed. I'm uneasy with some of the OTT assessemnts about how 'big' last night's win was. It will be a footnote if we fail against the Ukraine, or whoever it is in the semis. This type of OTT celebrations reminds me of Scunny fans when they took points off us. Consolation for loser fans. Our level of achievement in the Euros& WC is **** for a country of our size and tradition. The Krauts are gutted not because they lost to us but because they're out before the Quarters. Massive fail for them. We are long way behind the Dutch, Italians, German French and Spanish when it comes to punching our weight. We have a lot of catching up to do. Two World cups and two Euros would I suggest get us to the level where a country of our size and population should be.
Bus loads,Train loads,Mini Bus loads,Car loads...No condemnation from her who must be obeyed, yet Manchester was out of bounds and their covid rate was substantially lower than numerous regions in Scotland. I read in the Glasgow Evening Times the other night that the vast majority who went on buses/trains and ignored distancing, masks etc have tested positive!! Absolutely no right or reason to be in London and theyve reaped what they sowed. As far as I'm concerned from now on they can shove their rules where the sun don't shine!!!
Just looked through all your posts from yesterday and I’ve got to say it’s Absolute ****ing comedy gold !!!!!! Would not have some of you lot alongside me in the trenches......lol.......
Traditionally Johnny Continental has a different take on booing & whistling. He used to employ droning horns and klaxons when I was a kid staying up late to watch Sportsnight with Coleman and they had grainy footage of a European tie in NL or GER. All part of the diverse world of football supporting along with weird pitchside advertising, unusual goal nets and kit manufacturers you'd never heard pf Intense whistling when the opposition is in possession of the ball, this has gone on for decades, it's what they dp. When the opposition player shoots and misses badly. the whistling and catcalls increase in volume. They see it as poor skill and technique worthy of disgust. Whereas we cheer with derision when the opposition screw up up a shot as it means less danger. Too many of the wrong people discovering football now. They ruined comedy, they ruined rock and now they've ruined football. They want control and they want to remake it to their tastes. **** em.
After the England win last night against a very average German team every man and his dog are now England fans for a day. We have already won the Euro's. Yet on social media last night an hour into the game I was reading posts about how ****e England were. That's your modern football 'fan'. As quick to stick the boot in as they are to jump on the next bandwagon. Today, parents who cannot attend their little treasures school sports day cite the crowd allowed at Wembley last night as 'unfair'. Not Royal Ascot, Cheltenham or Wimbledon, just football. Main news item on BBC Look North tonight, some little five year old's ( in a replica Liverpool shirt already) life has been ruined because a semi pro club wouldn't sign him. 'They said he wasn't good enough' whined his mother. Peter Levy asked if it was fair that he couldn't play the game he loved etc etc..... He can, he's 5, play in the school playground with his 5 year old friends. Is it really newsworthy enough to make the main headlines on the local BBC news ? Typical of the HDM, they discovered a pub had been 'trashed' during Euro 2020 celebrations, police called etc etc....( reported on in the crime section no less) A table was damaged, that's all, probably an accident, but police are carrying out an investigation FFS. God help us if we don't win on Saturday night.
I am all for giving-it-all support to team and country but there are lines that should not be crossed...booing the opposition anthem and cheering at the image of a crying ten year old girl is beyond the pale for me.
Far from it pal. England played well last night and I was as pleased the next bloke when we won, and I've seen England win the World Cup. I've also followed every tournament since 1966 involving England and seen how the media build up the team beyond all realistic expectations then kick the chair from underneath them the second it goes pear shaped. Even after last night people are looking for negatives encouraged by the media. Booing the German national anthem ? I didn't hear anything from anyone when the Jocks jeered ours ? It's no big deal, it's to be expected, it's football. As for cheering images of kids crying because their team is losing. That's the media again scouring the crowd for the first one to shed a tear. You get it now at every game when a club is relegated, some exhibitionist in the crowd sobbing into his or her brand new half and half scarf, often with their face painted too, that seem to go hand in hand. It's almost tradition and another small way in which football is being cleansed and diluted to suit those watching at home on a couch with mates, eating a pizza, whilst having a bet, all of which will feature heavily in the adverts pre and during the tv coverage. They are slowly sanitising our game to a point were we wont recognise it in a few years times. As for drinks breaks ! FFS, do me a favour.
Yes,England played well last-night,if we play with the same determination and aggression from now on in, it will take a very good team to stop us winning this tournament. That said, the media circus and frenzy has begun, they're building us up to knock us down(given the opportunity)... Maggots the lot of them!!!
That's the beauty of being in control of our own minds...We don't necessarily have to buy into this 'modern world'?
And I'm not that keen on it. Am I the only one who thought that Rice was booked for absolutely **** all last night when that German was almost through on goal ? The free kick which was wrongly given could also have changed the game drastically if they had of scored from it. It's the old Francis Lee trick of leaving your trailing leg to get tangled up with the chasing player so it looks like you have been fouled. Sasha has made a fine art of it for Palace. Grealish did it playing for England v Romania in one of the friendlies. It's now as much part of the game as changing ends at half time and it goes on all over the pitch. Yet am I the only one who see's it ? Anyone who has played the game knows exactly what is going but no-one, referees, pundits, even VAR fails to see it ? Like throwing yourself to the floor screaming at virtually every challenge ? Ronaldo should have been sent off the other night when he flung himself to the floor holding his face when no-one had laid a finger on him. VAR see it in slow motion, and he was trying to get another player sent off by cheating. But nothing ever happens. Yet they can disallow a goal minutes after the ball has hit the back of the net because someone's elbow is offside ? Has football moving into the 'modern world' made the game a better one to watch ?
