One of my favourite days racing today. Not only the Ebor and other York races but also lots of 2YO action at the Curragh and also 2yo Group Racing at Deauville. Sandown chips in with a Group 3 and Listed 2YO races while Chester and Lingfield also have 2YO action. I am going to set myself a challenge to pick a horse in every 2YO race for a bit of fun/interest today. Can I just say, it's a disgrace that Newton Abbot has no 2YO races today
Morning 1.00 Sandown-Vandad Each Way @ 13-2 Mentioned this horse as a winner waiting to happen last year, and he is finally coming good winning his last two races
Newton Abbot 4.05 Galileo Silver Has fairly useful form over hurdles and this is only his second run over fences. Ran well at Newton Abbot last year when 2nd of todays mark. Sam Thomas has an eyecatching each way record with runners in handicap chases at this track over the last 5 seasons R 7 W 2 P 2 PL 9.25
Do Not Shoot The Messenger Time... I was planning on leaving York well alone today but my mate has sent me this: Melrose handicap (2:25): OMAN (currently trading at around 22/1) It is with Ralph Beckett and comfortably won a five runner handicap at Chester last time over this trip; has not been out of the first three in six starts.
Chelmsford 6.30 Hot Spell 9/2 (7 lbs better in with Fav and seemed to tire on debut) Chelmsford 7.00 Superior Force 5/1 (Had a break since a disappointing effort at Royal Ascot and can carry to weight to success in this Nursery) Chelmsford 7.30 New Mission 7/4 (Beaten Fav when 6th debut but going was heavy, 3rd from that race won well yesterday. Hood now left off.) Chester 1.10 Invigilate 3/1 (Weak in market on debut but should improve. 5 winners have come from the race. Upped to 7F, Sister to Expert Eye) Chester 2.45 Sadmah 11/4 (Drops in class from Group 2, had a break and gets sharper track now) Lingfield 5.40 Choirmaster 9/2 (Not a strong race and can make a winning debut) Lingfield 7.20 Lovesme Likearock 11/8 (Weak looking opposition, ran on heavy last time, has promise) Sandown 1.30 Implore 7/2 (Top weight but may do better now off mark. Stable form has really taken off recently (39%) Sandown 2.05 Reach For The Moon/Star From Afarhh SF (Fav odds on and Balding filly can chase him home) York 4.10 Eternal Halo 5/1 (Looked speedy here last time when making all. Can repeat the trick here) Curragh 4.25 Benitoite 9/2 (Pivotal filly entered in the Moyglare for Jessica Harrington in a guessing game where Aidan has two likely sorts) Curragh 4.55 Craic At Dawn 10/3 (3rd when unfancied on debut can build on that, HMS Endeavour was poor last time, Straight Answer is danger) Curragh 5.30 Swan Bay 5/2 (2nd on debut finishing strongly should improve markedly. Duke Of Sessa unlucky last time but priced accordingly) Curragh 6.05 Agartha 3/1 (Not the strongest G3 she won but most of these have form full of holes. Discoveries may do better but win doesn't read well) Curragh 6.40 Point Lonsdale/Point Gellibrand SF (Point Lonsdale cannot be opposed at 1/4 Fav, Joseph's other colt can improve to chase him home) A3 sheet of paper rather than a betting slip required. Right, some older horses to pick now. Good luck to all today.
Afternoon all, Another competitive days racing so again I’m going to have a go in the place markets again. 2.25Y IMPERIAL SUN, 6 places, Evs 3.35Y FUJAIRAH PRINCE, 8 places, Evs 4.45Y MIGRATION, 3 places, Evs 3 I’d fancy for win purposes are: 3.00Y SPACE BLUES 5/4 3.15S POET OF LIFE 6/4 3.45S SILENT ESCAPE 7/4
York 14,25 Ravenscraig Castle 20/1 e/w six places with WH, PP and Betfair, 18/1 Sky seven places 16,10 Boonie 10/3 Sandown 14,40 Potapova 10/1 e/w bet365 Killarney 14,50 It Could Be You 16/1 e/w five places (small bet, no rain bad for him) 16,35 Smoking Gun 15/2 e/w
Lord, Grendel, I am so slow I'll be up till midnight checking how that lot got on. ** The very best of luck to you though! ** **(That's why I just stick to one, max two, selections!)**
15:20 Chester - Mountain Brave (Very trick sprint handicap over the extended 5f. Selection drawn 4 which is a so-so one, but can't blame that if she fails! Course specialist Franny Norton on board for the Mark Johnston stable. 8/1 freely available at time of writing.) Good luck today with your wagers folks. As Grendel alluded to "t's a heck of a day's racing!" NON-RUNNER!
My arrows at York today. Ew Lucky 15. 2.25 Surrey Gold 3.00 Primo Bacio 3.35 Euchen Glen 4.10 Ballet Steps Have a good day all, good luck with yours
Humanitarian was a runner in Antony Van Dyck's Derby but he was awful behind Japan next time and then went awol for 455 days. He made a winning return but again has had a fair old absence since. Clearly has issues staying sound but perhaps first time back is the time to catch him. A hood is tried for the first time and at 16/1 for a stable in form I felt he was each-way material with EIGHT places available. 3.35 York Humanitarian 16/1 EW 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 SKYBET
Horse racing isn’t as easy as backing the short price ones. As we’ve already seen horses improve massively from runs as two year olds and regress/stall similarly.
Primo Bacio hasn't had the best of runs in her last two starts and probably found it too soft last time. Dropped to 7F and back on a sound surface I thought she might give Space Blues a race today. 3.00 York Primo Bacio 10/3
I think only one of the horses I backed was a favourite. Shorter priced than mine won the first race and the odds-on hosed up in the next race. I did say it was my own bit of fun for the day.
Be nice to see Fujaira Prince repeat the dose here. I can't believe we are seeing Mt Leinster here - that really will be a miracle if he can win. But it is Willie ..........
With Swan Bay a NR I swapped to the mentioned Duke De Sessa and he obliged. Four winners, 4/1,4/1,7/4 and 6/4 also had three seconds. In the end it was almost all fancied ones who won the races. Just one 14/1 winner in a race where mine was beaten a head after the 4/11 Fav flopped. The winning SP's in the 2YO races were 5/2, 4/1, 7/2, 15/8, 6/4, 4/1, 1/6, 5/4, 7/4, 13/2, 2/5, 7/2, 14/1, 5/2, 9/4 so it looks like I should have been doing more favourites and not less.
