Because Stan Anderson always played 4 as an attacking half back and Jimmy McNab always played 6,alongside King Charles at the back! Mind you, Colin Todd,wearing 4 then played alongside Charlie, whilst Slim Jim played 6 in midfield......so,the answer is, I don't know!
Its a throwback to the old fashioned 235 formation. Teams were numbered 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 The press continued to publish line ups in that formation for years after teams stopped lining up in that way and were, in reality, playing the WM formation when the 5 would have dropped between the 2 and 3. Later on, when most teams shifted to four at the back, it was because a second half back, in this case the 6, was pulled back to play as a second centre back. The convention only applies to the British Isles, in some countries, 5 is the traditional number for a right back.
Just seen a German report saying that Hoffman's loan to us includes an obligation (not an option) to buy if we get promoted. We may even have a similar deal agreed with Union on Dejaku. Forget Bayern - we're essentially signing him from Union, so they can construct the loan deal however they / we want
I know mate, but just cast your mind back to last season and how many CB's we lost to injury. We're only talking about 2 injuries here. If Cirkin gets injured, Huggins can switch to LB with Winny at RB.But if Evans gets injured too, we are short of a DM. I'm sure they will cover it if they can, if they can't we'll have to make do. Either way it's been an amazing window.
This is the most exciting deadline day we have had in ages. Nice to be in a situation where we have everything we need and are trying to improve it, rather than be desperate to fill obvious gaps.
Ideally we have 2 players for every position (not that it saved us last season in defence) but Johnson has already said that he will take some players (like O9) who can play a couple of positions as it means we have sign fewer players but pay more in terms of wages/fees I also think we should be utilising our u23s more than we did last season
And,for a welcome change, to have people in place who know what they're doing in negotiating these deals. It's a complete contrast to the recent,and not so recent, past.
