To be fair Bairstow was a very good batter in his early test career but has gone of the boil. Could be a lack of red ball cricket played, but the same applies to others including Root. Both played just three games for Yorkshire early in the season last year. Not enough in inclement weather to get into a groove.
It's all down to limited over cricket. Most batsmen today, cannot play the 5 day game It's all about patience, wearing down the bowlers, make the bowlers bowl at the stumps. When I was playing 40yrs ago, as an opening batsman, my coach would bollock you if you played at a ball that was more than 6inch outside the line of the stumps, irrespective of whether you hit the ball or not. Test cricket is a different game to limited over, and should be approached with a different mind set.
Bairstow got his century in the last over of the day. He batted well with Stokes when it wasn't easy with the ball spitting and hitting their gloves.
As I said. At last someone other than Root (every time I print Root auto changes it to Foot for some weird reason), has stood up and delivered. Pity Stokes couldn't stay. Buttler? Why oh why is he playing? Dropped catches, no runs. Time for Foakes surely.
Still trying to work out why Wood was given out when there was no mark on hotspot, no deviation on the ball and a sound on snicko roughly when the ball passed the bat, but it could have been anything. Anyway, we have our highest opening stand (30) and have a day to survive tomorrow
Draw. Wow, we didn't capitulate, well not totally. Stokes and Bairstowe, both injured, and Crawley did enough. But rain cut seven overs of the days play which helped.
I know. I am not sure whether I should be happy or sad that this might dull the impetus to change anything at the county level as it is an 'improvement' on last tour! Still, bottom of the world test championship should put a rocket up their backsides. Jimmy has nerves of steel!
At least this now means the Aussies cannot whitewash us 5-0, for once I am grateful to the British Weather (even though it's in Oz) helping us out
Good start this morning, but Aussie fighting back. No Bairstow, Buttler or Anderson today. Batting looks fragile, again.
7 players got double figures but nobody went on to a 50 let alone 100. A deficit of 115... scant conciliation... we can bowl under the lights woopty do, I doubt we could chase 250 and 200 would be a challange!
First 50 opening partnership of the Ashes for England! We need 220 more with all 10 wickets in hand. Dare to dream!!
Hmmm - I should have known better. From 68/1 to 107/7, lambs to the proverbial slaughter for one final time. At least it's four years before we go back there again!
Batsmen didn't turn up all series. We only got once century in 10 innings and the team didn't score over 300 once. On the whole the bowlers did well and managed to work well as a unit even though they had no score board pressure to work with. We missed the pace of Woods when he was rested and I am glad he got his reward today with lots of wickets. We need a new spinner, openers (crawley might make it) new batsmen in general and the ECB to have some county championship matches in the middle of the summer not spring and autumn!
