Hello, all. Hope everyone well. Just a few notes re the old Grand National. (i) 20 of the last 26 Grand National winners were making their Grand National debuts. (ii) No horse wearing the number '1' on the racecard has won the Grand National since 1974. (iii) In the previous 9 Grand Nationals 40 horses aged 12+ have run. In '22 there are only 2. (iv) The leading 3 trainers in the British Trainers Championship have between them just 1 runner - the 66/1 shot Blaklion! Last evening / this morning I backed 2 horses in the Grand National. I really feel that ESCARIA TEN (14/1) should be favourite and believe he has 2 outstanding pieces of form to his name. His run at Fairyhouse, last time, and his placing in last terms NH Chase. A repeat of either effort and I think he will go very, very close. And at a huge price DEISE ABA (100/1, each-way first 6 places). Some may find it silly to reference a run over hurdles but felt this ones effort at Aintree, in the Autumn, in a Pertemps race was excellent. This strong stayer has run some good races since and think those odds are 5 times the price they should be. Good luck all
The strongest narrative re tomorrow's big 'un though must be the fact that it will be the forum's favourite Corinthian's last ride in a race. Sure to be emotional, team. Good luck old boy and thanks for everything you have accomplished. The triumvirate of the elder Mr Waley-Cohen, Lieutenant Henderson and the younger Mr Waley-Cohen has always been my fave owner, trainer, jockey line-up. Sad to think they will never team up like that again. At the next Not 606 moderator and management executive meeting agenda item 1, therefore, must be should a statue be erected re the forum's favourite Corinthian outside Not 606 House?!? I'd say 'yes' Would look wonderful next to the statue of me, Lieutenant Henderson and Princess Camilla. You know it makes sense... Oh and can you believe that in just over a week the Greenham, Freddie Darling, Nellie Gwyn and the John Craven Stakes will all have been run?!? Cor blimey, say I.
My bets on the Grand National Mount Ida 40/1 e/w four places Enjoy D'Allen 33/1 e/w four places Dingo Dollar 66/1 e/w six places Kildisart 40/1 e/w six places and small bet Domaine De L'Isle 100/1 e/w six places (Happygolucky 50/1 e/w NR, Secret Reprieve 25/1 e/w NR) Good luck all.
For the Grand National 'charge' (17:15) have following two selections, for what it's worth! Eclair Surf (As advised a couple of days ago this gelding has snuck-in due to a few unexpected withdrawals. On his excellent run in this year's Eider Chase 43-days ago, have to include him with just 10-6 on his back! Thomas Bellamy rides for the Emma Lavelle yard. Best price 14/1 at time of writing, freely available) Escaria Ten (Agree with the above related comments from Sir Barney. This French-bred gelding could have one of the best chances of Gordon Elliott's 7-entries? Strangely, has only run 7-times over fences, so is relatively inexperienced, but his form over the big obstacles is excellent. Jockey, Adrian Heskin, is a sound booking for the Elliott stable .Again, 14/1 is best price at time of writing, freely-available) E/W on each and a Rev. Forecast Good luck to you all!
Agusta Gold was my fancy for last years Grand National but did not run Now with Willie Mullins, so played the ten place market with Bet 365 @ 45-1
Commodore wins the national tomorrow. Those that followed mon mome will know he won the same race at Cheltenham before swerving the festival and winning the National.
Morning Back down in class will give one more chance in the 4.15 to Espoir De Romay Each Way @ 8-1 [Bet 365] 5 places
2 for me in the GN. De Rasher Counter @ 66/1 and Fortescue @ 33/1. DRC has the same rating now as when he prevailed in the Henessey a few years back. His 1 run in a year and half is a negative trend for the race but I can’t have it that the Lavelle/Fenton combo won’t have him fit for this. Fortescue represents sunny Shropshire so got to have a few £ on him. No forlorn hope either. Trainer took him out of last week’s Scottish National and gambled on him getting in here and he’s just sneaked in. Good luck everyone.
I bumped into a few Irish lads in Liverpool, last night. They'd had a tip and were adamant that as long as CAP DU NORD stays on its feet it today, it wins.
In the National there are a few I like but cant back them all so settled for Delta Work and Any Second Now. My main bet is Patrick's ride in the last. Best of luck to those having a wager.
Aintree 13,45 Whatsnotoknow 28/1 e/w bet365 five places, 22/1 sky seven places 16,15 Mint Condition 33/1 e/w WH, bet365, PP and betfair all five places, sky 28/1 six places 18,20 Ennest Gray 4/1
I'm not sure if after several years of being on here that Sir Barney has me brainwashed but I also will be siding with Walking On Air 4/1 in the novice hurdle. Three Stripe Life has had a couple of hard races recently and being the fresher horse and more unexposed I think he could land the spoils. Several have useful form in the race but I'm not sure it's of a standard capable of lowering the front two in betting colours today. Onto the Grand National and I think Eclair Surf 14/1 has outstanding claims along with Run Wild Fred 16/1 and Death Duty 40/1. Best of luck
Know you're just kidding, STH, but I don't think he can brainwash too many on this forum, there are far too many knowledgeable racegoers contributing to allow that. Don't appreciate it always, but it's best to let him ramble on about 'the forum's favourite trainer', 'Mr Ponsonby', 'carrots were cut too thick', and the like. Do agree with him occasionally though (not that it bothers him whether I do or I don't! ) as I did today. All said and done, it goes to make-up an interesting forum racing section (the best section of all, by far!). Without embarrassing Oddy too much, we owe him a lot in keeping everything going after Ron 'retired', even though he must be as busy as heck with his relatively new job. Many thanks, Oddy! P.S Glad to see you favour Eclair Surf, interesting runner!
