The Hungerford Stakes (3:35) does not look as strong as its numbers suggest. Jumby, Run To Freedom, Primo Bacio and Wings Of War all look out of their depth. I do not think that Happy Romance is really crying out for this step up in trip and is on quite a long losing run; and the three year old Dubai Poet has not been winning at a lower level since recording his only victory over course and distance as a juvenile. Tiber Flow was only about four lengths behind in the Commonwealth Cup but his two career wins over seven furlongs were in four runner races and his last victory, at this track, does not look great form so his odds may be more a reflection of his trainer’s form. Chindit was well outgunned in the Sussex but his victory in the Summer Mile leaves him with a penalty here; and that could play into the hands of six year old POGO, a bit of a seven furlong specialist who went down in a three-way blanket finish to the Lennox Stakes but could get his way up front here. I know there is a bit of a shortage of rain but the card at HQ is very poor when one considers how many horses live within walking distance of the course. I like the Grey Horse race gimmick but this year’s renewal looks like a good chance for Mister Bluebird as Come On Girl prefers kitty litter to turf these days.
A competitive renewal of the Great St Wilfred and it would be great if Summerghand could win another nice prize. My choice though is JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE (9/1) who has a flawless record at the track. Jockey Kevin Stott is the ideal partner for a race of this nature.
In the Class-2 Handicap at Newbury over the straight 7f, (15:00), Documenting has a decent chance of a good run. The verteran 9-y-o gelding is still as lively as ever, as recent form lines indicate, having run three very good races recently at York and twice at Ascot. Trip and conditions ideal for the old boy. Jack Mitchell on board for the Kevin Frost yard. At SP. Plus Rev.Forecast: Documenting/Fivethousandtoone. Have a good day folks!

Agree with QM about Pogo. The Denford Stakes (formerly the Washington Singer Stakes and won by Brigadier Gerard 52 years ago, though then over 6f) looks a very competitive race. Victory Dance (by Dubawi: who else) has the hottest form but really any of the other 4 could win it. Whoever wins it needs to like firm ground and my hope is Candle of Hope continues her unbeaten run.
Slightly disappointing run by Candle of Hope but I must question the riding tactics of a few of the jockeys. This was a race run for horses whose sire or dam won over further than 10f: IE they should get the trip of 7f comfortably. Yet they were ridden as if there was a chance they might not. One of the riders should have started their run 3-4f out expecting to stay the trip. Instead they dawdled along for 5f unril the favourite made his decisive sprint for the line, and funnily enough couldn't outsprint him..
What a grand old servant Documenting is for the Kevin Frost yard. The old boy really stuck it out well to win this 7f. event at Newbury, ably assisted by a fine ride from Jack Mitchell. Did my heart good, that.
