I, like most of us, grew up on a Council Estate and never once questioned my parents income - it was never a discussion.

We didn't eat a lot of fast food because it was considered a treat, not an always available option.

We ate homemade meals consisting of meat, potatoes and vegetables (which were not an optional choice). No vegetables, no dessert !

We grew up during a time when we mowed lawns, pulled weeds, babysat, and helped neighbours with chores to earn our own money. We by no means were given everything that we wanted.

We went outside a lot to play football, ride bikes, play marbles, play hide and seek, or went swimming. We rarely just sat inside, and were never 'glued' to a screen.

    Bottled water was unheard of.

After school, we came home and did homework and chores, before going outside to play.

We had to tell our parents where we were going, who we were going with, and be home when it got dark.

You LEARNED from your parents instead of disrespecting them and treating them as if they knew absolutely nothing. What they said was LAW and you did not question it.

We respected coppers and teachers, and most of us turned out alright.

We watched what we said around our elders because we knew that if we disrespected any grown-up we would get a real telling off. It wasn't called abuse, it was called discipline.

We held doors, carried shopping and gave up our seat for older people without being asked.

You didn't hear swear words on the radio in songs or TV.

“Please and thank you" were part of our daily vocabulary.

The world that we live in now is just so full of people who hate and disrespect others.

I will never forget where I came from, and I only wish that children nowadays had half the chance of having the fun and respect for real life that we grew up with . . . . and we were never bored !

I suspect that many, reading that, will immediately think, 'Rose tinted specs'.

But I can go along with every word.

    Ah, nostalgia.
Even that's not what it used to be.

Children don't act this way by themselves though. They've got parents who were "never glued to a screen" when they were young but give the child have an iPad to stop them crying or entertain them so they can go back to watching their programmes.

Parents don't let their children stay out until it's dark and give them a mobile phone for "emergencies".

Parents have decided that it's easy to pick up a takeaway than give their kids a nutritious diet.

More often than not, parents will kick off at a teacher for disciplining their child rather than support the decision.

At some point, the respectful children that you reference grew up and decided to bring their children up differently. It's not the child's fault - well not predominantly anyway.

There are still an awful lot of kids who play out, stay out until dark, respect their teachers and their elders. Kids who are being brought up the right way by their parents.
Unfortunately this societal change is the thin end of the wedge - we only hear about the kids who get stabbed, or the obese kids living on kebabs and pop because "boring" doesn't sell

We are privileged to have a nice house in a nice estate - my son has mates from a lot of different backgrounds and I've always impressed on him not to boast/gloat about the many privileges he has. My kids have a lot more than I did growing up, but we were not by any means poor - it's just evolution of "normal" behaviour. Every one of my kids' friends, regardless of background are always polite and courteous when they are in our house - that is a testament to their own parents

I don't think the old fashioned values have disappeared, they are often masked by what older generation think are unnatural behaviours. my 75yo Dad for example, moans about the kids being "glued" to their screens, then spends the rest of the evening staring at his ipad, completely disengaged from the rest of the room

I fear for my grandchildren tbh.

They don't have much time as happy innocents and are pushed into growing up too quickly. They know far too much to daydream, play silly games and just be daft kids.

It's all a shame but there's no going back ...

... like the Premier League, it's being ruined by 'improving it'.

Again Smug, I use my own kids as an example. My lad is football daft and whilst he spends a fair amount of time playing FIFA etc he's always out with his mates on the field kicking a ball about, or getting on their bikes down to the gym or the swimming pool. My daughter spends more time in her room, but like most girls it's all about gossip and chat with her mates - they are on facetime all the time, in the same way my sister used to come home from school and get straight on the phone to the girls she'd just spent all day with. Same behaviours, just different media

There are kids playing out all over this estate we live on. It's refreshing to see

Fat Sam expected at Leeds.....they are in a real mess.:emoticon-0102-bigsm
Mind you,I was hoping Leicester,Forest to come down with Southampton if we don't go up. I fear them the least above Leeds or Everton( if we don't quite make it this year) and can mount a serious challenge next season.

What a tremendous post. I was born in the 80s and raised in the 90s, so I caught the back end of analog and digital became more profound in my late teens early 20s. I wouldn't swap my childhood for anything now. But I echo all of your sentiments because I adhered to them the same way. A friend request was knocking on your mates door.

Nowt wrong with council estates, it seems some use the term to mock, deride or look down on those that live in them. As you say a fair number that post on here would have been born and bred in them.

In fact nothing wrong with selling council houses to those that have paid rent and lived in them for years. The proceeds should however have been used to build more council houses for rent. Instead, Thatcher used the money to bribe voters in a one off fashion.

Don’t know if this is true or not, but I’m sure I read the council house money that was collected from selling them couldn’t be used for building new houses but had to be put into accounts where only the interest could be used. I’m sure someone on here will know if this is true or not.

My probably poor understanding was half the proceeds could be kept by the councils, but had to be used to reduce debt, not build houses. So also the Treasury did not have to give councils more grants if their debt was reduced?

I was brought up in a council house, and l am proud to say so. Most families were in the same boat, but in a friendly and safe environment which never held me back.

I don’t think I knew anyone who owned a house, but in those days I don’t think anyone cared what your mates dad did for a living or if they owned their house.

    The invisible man returns . . . .

please log in to view this image

Tommy Miller has been appointed as Hooliooo's assistant manager.

Miller brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously held the same position at Spennymoor Town in National League North between 2016 and 2021, and at Buxton last season.

He was a team-mate of Julio Arca at Sunderland in the mid-2000s, with the pair now set to link up again as the Mariners’ new management team.

Miller also had a seven-month spell as Spennymoor manager, and was a part of the coaching staff which helped the club to a fourth-placed finish in National League North in the 2018-19 season.

His playing career started with Hartlepool United in 1997, and after establishing himself as a goal scoring midfielder there, he had a successful four-year stint with Ipswich Town.

Miller was snapped up by Sunderland in 2005 and represented the club 29 times in the Premier League, becoming invisible before completing his career with moves to Preston North End, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Swindon Town, Bury, Hartlepool and Halifax Town.

He has since become a hugely-respected coach, which made him the ideal candidate to assist Arca at 1st Cloud Arena.
