Being reported that Sunak is taking a day off the campaign trail tomorrow to meet with his senior aides. Unprecedented move. They’re insisting that it’s not a campaign relaunch but this is very unusual.
I have seen a couple of reactions saying that the July 4 date may impact on the student vote as they may be moving around the country in preparation for university. I know nothing about term times or even if this is valid, but students can (apparently) be on the electoral roll for their home and for their university home, so long as they only vote at one location, so would imagine it shouldn’t be that big an issue. On the topic of ID, I saw a report that said that the Minister of State for Veterans had asked that a Veteran’s ID card should be accepted at the polling station as a valid form of identification, but was knocked back. The reason given was that if it was accepted then they would have to accept student ID cards, which would make it easier for students to vote.
So, not sure who to vote for? Why not let the internet decide https://uk.isidewith.com/political-quiz I matched 84% women's equality party 84% Lib Dems 84%% Rejoin EU Party 84% Labour Looks like I have a lot of choice Most unis will have finished by the 4th of July. When I was at uni, we had exams in May and the last day of term was June 12th in my last year. Can't remember the dates for my 2nd and 1st, I only remember the third year as I had a date with a girl the next day on the 13th. The university year starts later than the school year, so unless people are really keen, they won't likely be moving to their uni yet.
Knowing the state of that Party these days they will probably cancel the election because its got off to a bad start. Which I believe he can technically do until the dissolution of Parliament this Thursday, it would be absolutely mad but I wouldn't put it past them.
It would sink them completely. It would be straight up insane. I’m not sure how they’d even go about that
Genuinely ridiculous. As chilco said, it seems like the Tories are trying to lose on purpose for whatever reason. Maybe they hope that by handing a steaming pile of turd to labour they’ll avoid some of the blame in the distant future. But... Christ this is just mental isn’t it.
Surely all this will do is increase the turn out of young people desperate to vote against this? I know I would if I were 18-early 20s. it’s not exactly going to win votes from people who were t already going to vote conservative is it? Maybe it pinches some reform people back ? But I’m not convinced
It's naked electioneering, good opportunities for the little man to pose with some rough arse squaddies just as Liar used to do ......but I honestly can't decide whether it may be a good idea or not.
It’s a terrible idea, and certainly not a policy that should be scribbled on an envelope on day three of an election campaign before being fed to the client press. It’s absolute desperation, genuinely think he’s gone rogue and there’s no knowing what idiocy he might start spouting next.
It makes sense to those who are "proudly patriotic," and subscribe to the values of Law and Order. On.another level it takes a group.of young people off the streets in áreas of high unemployment. And the cynical.would argue it provides cannon fodder whenever the UK gets involved in.another war.
I’m not so sure. It’s got nothing to do with Law really. Maybe the “Order” part. But how is it going to be enforced? I would expect the areas you mention are the areas that it will be hardest to make people go. And if mass amounts of people aren’t about it then the actual service itself will be constantly disrupted. We don’t have the police or army levels to start forcibly rounding people up who don’t want to do this. If they are denied work until they have - maybe. But that makes the work situation even more dire than it currently is This sort of thing requires some degree of buy in. The last time it happened it was shortly after WW2 and the attitude of the population in general was a lot different. Especially towards the country / national pride It’s also similar to how the mindset that saw people in their thousands sign up to WW1 - including whole classes from oxbridge intakes. That simply would never ever happen. You’d never get children of elites bending rules to sign up or delaying lucrative careers. The country is just too different now. You can’t destroy the opportunities of more than one generation of young people, rip up the “social contract” many were raised with and then expect them to meekly just toddle over the the barracks when asked
