It just seems a bizarre idea to me. Yes, I remember when I was younger all the daft old buggers harumphing on about how NS makes a man of you and all that stuff - but they'd actually done it, or lived through the war themselves. It made more sense to them, but no-one under 80 now will even have done it, so I'm not sure how many will actually think it's a good idea. Especially if, like me, they were horrified at the prospect when we were potential victims. Now I'm a daft old bugger myself and I certainly wouldn't want to see it. It was ended for many reasons. It took people out of other areas of the economy, and the generals didn't want to waste time and resources trying to make pimply pacifists like me into killing machines, only to see them bugger off after a couple of years. Far better to attract people for whom that life is appealing, and make them into career professionals. I was an apprentice in printing at 16, it was a 5-year one and you weren't allowed to enter into it any older. NS would have buggered that. Just another example of Tories harking back to the "good old days of Empire" for me.
If you want to learn some trades army or Air force can do a lot for you. Truck drivers or missle operators or drone murderer etc. I fail to see how making everyone either do community service (which everyone will go for) solves any issues and all that will happen is they will have to employ people to look after a bunch of inbetweeners every Saturday at massive cost. Can you imagine having to supervise the inbetweeners on your weekend cos of sunak?

Not a horrible idea. Give a bunch of teenagers a chance to go out mingle with different people of different backgrounds, potentially learn some different skills and open up aveneues that they maybe never thought of. Not sure mandatory is right, but maybe a lot more opportunities
I've said we needed something like this for years TBF, but you just know the Tories will **** it up somehow. And, of course, there will be a financial benefit to them somehow too. Most will just opt for the community service aspect which is what I think they actually want; they've said people need to volunteer more in the past.
They still had it here when I moved across, though not for much longer. Most people by then end did community things, generally in nursing homes. I'm not clamouring to bring it back but I also don't think it's the worst idea.
there won't be enough volunteer jobs in the University areas which is where a bout 30-40% of 18 year olds will be for the majority of the year
Just seems a backward step to me. There were valid reasons for ending it, as I mentioned above. Community service isn't a terrible idea, if it's just at weekends, but are people who are already engaged in gainful employment going to want to give up their free time? I see no net advantage to the community in mandatory military service.
If thry have 2.5bil to throw about why not just spend it on more volunteer soldiers to man the army and they'd be interested in learning their trades. Radical thinking this.
Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 count charges and will be sentenced on the 11th of July. He is still leading in the opinion poll to be the next president of the United States.
If someone is going to vote for you after you try to overthrow the government... they're still going to vote for you after you pay hush money to a porn star.
The odd thing is that most of those who will vote for him are probably horrified that porn stars even exist and pray that they burn in hell for eternity. Perhaps they've convinced themselves that a porn star was sent by the devil to tempt their noble leader to stray from his obvious path of righteousness.
Most thought Donald Trump being president was as bad as it could get... But he we are with the potential of having a imprisoned Trump being re-elected
