Liverpool's Defence Is Nothing Special

For the past few weeks, I've seen many scousers claim that their defence is the finest in the league, but like most people, I disagree. They've got a fairly good defence but it's far from the best in the league. Agger and Enrique are quality players while Skrtel and Johnson are decent - nothing more.

The reason I think they've got a good defensive record this season is because their defence gets a lot of protection from their midfield. The likes of Lucas (before his injury), Henderson, Adam and Spearing offer more defensively than they do going forward.

It's no surprise they're struggling to score goals this season. They put too much effort into defending, they need to concentrate more on scoring if they want to progress. They're just too negative under the management of Queen Kenny.

Btw, I know it won't be long before the rulers of delusion come on here and start telling us all how unlucky they've been in front of goal and how many times they've hit the post (yes, things do get that desperate at times).

 

Because it will get closed down for no ****ing reason, like most of my articles do.

My point still stands anyway, their defence is nothing special.

The joint best defence in the league. Conceded 14 goals which is the same as United. Apart from the Spurs game in which we had two players sent off and lost 4-0, we haven't allowed a team to score more than 1 goal against us. (I think that makes sense... )

So you can understand why we are happy with our defence!

Glen Johnson has been excellent at right-back. Some fans felt that he attacks well but is a bit suspect in defence but he has looked solid in defence this season. Due to injury problems last season, Glen had to play at left-back so that meant he had to cut out the attacks and concentrate on the defensive side of his game and that has helped Glen massively. Daniel Agger is an excellent defender but has had his injury problems over the years and if he stays fit, he is an excellent defender. Martin Skrtel has had his critics but he has looked good beside Agger. Improved massively over the past year... And Jose Enrique has looked like a bargin at around £6M. Solid in defence and has looked decent going forward.

And add to that Jamie Carragher, Martin Kelly & Sebastian Coates and we've got good cover as well.

Not forgetting Pepe Reina of course... Mr consistent over the past 6 years at Liverpool.

I do agree with you regarding defensive protection from midfield. Lucas has been outstanding for us in the past couple of years after a difficult start to his Anfield career. Breaks up attacks well and is an important part of our team. Will be a massive loss for us but we've got cover in Spearing who looked good at the back end of last season.

I do disagree with you regarding Adam though. He is more of an attacking player than a defensive player. Doesn't contribute much in a defensive sense...
