I'm sure as a result of this thread Saint Lambden will quite rightly advise me to get a better job. That said I'm actually on leave today! I used to go to loads of gigs in late 70's early 80's. Saw The Jam more than 30 times, Madness, The Beat, UB40, Undertones etc. Reading a couple of other threads and sharing The Second Stains high regard for XTC I wondered which bands/groups other posters were into?
My love of music goes back to the 1960's and I've had as many favourite bands as there are years in between now and then, if not more. Beatles and Stones, Led Zep, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Eagles, Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, Police, Clash. And then there came the 80's when music died, apart from a few outposts like XTC. Things got better in the 90's with bands like Oasis and Radiohead, and there are loads of good new bands around nowadays. My favourite current bands would have to be Porcupine Tree and Muse. All time favourites? Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band of all time but no-one has stood the test of time better than Neil Young.
Radiohead are my favourite band of all time. Bob Dylan and Neil Young are both incredible (though not bands), The National and Elbow for more recent bands. Also 65daysofstatic and The Decemberists.
When I was leaving Soton as a teenager it was the early 60's and there were no bands. Then I was into yer blues. Muddy Walters, that sort of thing that naturally led into John Mayall/Eric Clapton etc. Then the greatest band to stride the earth hove into view at The Roundhouse in July 1968 and I have been a Doors freak ever since. Also love Love. Jimi, of course. As above, Crimso, Floyd, of course. Punk threw up (pardon the pun) some great bands, but bizarrely got me back into The Who, but Ian Dury is still a favourite. 80's left me cold (confess to not knowing XTC but will remedy that this morning) but sine then it has been overwhelming. Were Nirvana 80's? Not really, but add them. Oasis blew me away, the Arctics are just amazing. Muse has to be the greatest live band ever. But it's the plethora of smaller bands that I've loved since packing up work. Reverend & The Makers were brilliant in my view, and I'm sorry to see them pass. The Enemy made that great first album. One of the best things (amongst lots of good things) about living around Liverpool and Manchester is the number of really good bands you can see that, if lucky, might feature in The Big Issue and nowhere else. Nice post. Bugger all to do with Saints, but hey. Have a good day
Best band in the history of the universe ; "Ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles California - The Doors" Best live act seen by me; The Damned, Soton uni, 1977
Muse! saw them at wembley stadium 2010 was unreal. Like abit of the rolling stones, guns n roses, foo fighters, artic monkeys all sorts really. Like abit of grime aswell!
God I forgot the Doors too! And Jimi! <hangs head in shame> Muse at Glastonbury 2010 were the best live act I've ever seen, apart from Neil Young in 2009.
Sign me up to the Muse live brigade. Never been a *massive* fan but always liked the albums quite a lot but Reading 2011 was awesome. Elbow just before them too
My contribution will look rather out of place on this thread I fear. I like jazz and swing, Cotton Club from the 1920's and 30's - Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and his orchestra, Louis Armstrong etc. Being also a fan of the 19th century romantic composers, I hold the music of Mahler and Wagner close to my heart. Birgit Nilsson is my favourite soprano of all time. Having said all that I did see Blondie perform live once.
I prefer Mahler to Wagner myself - Bach may possibly be my favourite classical composer, Liszt up there too.
Agreed with much of the above. Funnily enough though, in terms of live performance, The Cult were something to see back in the day (not now so much though....) - saw them supporting Guns N Roses and they blew them out the water. Sadly never got to see Zep though have seen Plant/Page on a few occasions. Fortunately for me my job takes me to many, many gigs. There's lots of talent out there at the moment, but no investment in development.......
My musical interests are quite eclectic in that I love early country blues and Jazz and I also love opera. To be honest I like all music, well almost, and my favourite bands have to be The Who and The Moody Blues. The greatest live performer I ever saw was Jimi Hendrix at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens. I did see Steeleye Span in Winchester about a year ago just because I have always been in love with Maddy Prior’s voice and I wanted to hear her live. She was magical.
Weird mix of music for me, but generally I'd like more rocky music. Muse, Stereophonics, Nickelback, Lostprophets, Radiohead, then going back a bit of The Jam, Primal Scream, The Doors (again!), Pearl Jam. I a;so like more electronic music, but I won't say who at the of being shot down epicly
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Love and Arthur Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, T-Rex, The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, The La's, The Stone Roses, Nirvana, Oasis, The Strokes, The Libertines, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Black Keys. any many, many more.
1980's stuff for me, Rick Wakeman, Yes, Pink Floyd, JMJ, and all that sort of thing, long time since I actually bought anything new, but that is just me!
