    Article from bbcsport website

Newcastle plan to open contract talks with Jose Enrique as soon as their Premier League status is secure.

Alan Pardew's side are currently four points clear of the relegation zone while Spanish defender Enrique, 25, has 15 months of his deal remaining.

Newcastle signed the left-back from Villarreal for £6.3m in August 2007.

This week, Newcastle announced overall losses of £17.1m for the year ending 30 June 2010, but the club say they are heading in the right direction.

The Magpies claim they expect to break even if they remain in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley wants the club to be challenging for a European spot on a regular basis as part of his long-term strategy.

Ashley, who took over in 2007, watched the Magpies slide into the Championship two seasons ago before winning back promotion at the first attempt.

Managing director Derek Llambias said: "Mike knows where we should be in four or five years. We want to be challenging for Europe every season."

Newcastle last played in Europe during the 2006/2007 season, when they reached the last 16 of the Uefa Cup.

obviously this is what we all already know, but hopefully the reason for this article is based on a clear indiction of that if we are still a Premier League Team Enrique will be happy to stay

I think Jose made it clear himself that he wanted to stay as long as we were in the Prem.

Hopefully. Lets just get secure, and then get Jose and Joey into negotiations!

Think if we can get Jose to sign then make it clear to Barton we will spend the 35mil we should get him too. All hinges on us staying up of course, which looks likely.

If we could get these to signed it would feel like 2summer signings straight away for me and I would be very positive for a productive summer

The thing that worries me is, if Jose was actually intent on staying with us aslong as we are a top flight team, then why not sign a contract with a relegation clause allowing him to leave if the worst happens? I presume that this is the case with Tiote and Ben Arfa so why not him?
Sadly, I'm not confident at all that he'll be here next year.

He has 15 months left on his existing contract which will see him through until it's time to potentially open talks and sign a new one.

And why do you presume this is the case with Tiote and Ben Arfa? I haven't heard this before.

He wouldnt want to sign a deal then potentially leave 3 months later, I mean, what kind of long haired ****er would lie to the fans like that by signing a long term deal, giving them false hope before ****ing off to say, Liverpool?

I suspect that Barton and Enrique may decide to leave talks till the summer, to see if the £35m from the Carroll sale is re-invested in the squad, as promised. Eminently sensible of them if that is the case, and puts their future, at NUFC (or otherwise) totally in the hands of the club.
