I don't get why there would be ANY rivalry? Miles apart, not played each other frequently enough - it's a ****ing mystery to me?
So it was a management rivalry dating back to the 70s? I don't think even the Palace/Brighton fans know why from reading some of the sites. Certainly has to go down as one of the strangest rivalries in league football.
Love it how the media have a ****fest over Brighton and their lovely fluid football, even the commentator says "Brighton play all their football on the deck" 10 minutes in: long ball, long ball, long ball, long ball If they were playing in our kit the commentator would be saying "they're not the best team to watch but..."
I got told by a palace fan that Alan mullery there ex manager went on national tv and ripped up a £5 note and said "that's what palace are worth" then went to Brighton. Also some palace fans got stabbed by Brighton supporters in the 70s. That's what he told me he said its pure hatred.
In the early part of the season when we were playing some good football we got plaudits. We changed to get more points when all our strikers were injured and then we had our bad spell. I don't think we were ever playing long balls but we were certainly less skillful later on in the season.
At the end of a game between the two, Mullery took some loose change out of his pocket, through it on the pitch and said 'I wouldn't pay that much for the entire Palace team'.
Portsmouth is 40 miles from Brighton. London is 55-60 from Brighton. Madness. It's a pretty weak reason
Someone posted on this topic a few weeks ago that it was because Palace have strong homophobic beliefs. I'd go with that.
