SUNDERLAND BOSS POYET CONVINCED ABOUT WICKHAM, FLETCHER PARTNERSHIP Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is happy to back Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher as his first-choice attack. He is pleased with what he's seen in preseason. Poyet said: âFletch is a much happier person now he has been able to do a whole pre-season without any problems and be proper fit to play football. That makes a difference. We just need to be lucky to keep him fit. âConnor showed us last year what he can do. I think heâs feeling better with Fletch next to him so itâs an option. These games have given me information to make decisions about how weâre going to play in the next few weeks. âThey both understand each other very well and they linked well in Portugal. A couple of times Connor has been one-on-one with the keeper. âItâs important because the more times you play together, the more you understand each other.â
Good enough for Gus, good enough for me. Reading between the lines, it might also mean we won't be signing a striker in the next couple of weeks, at least up until just before the transfer window closing.
i get the feeling Borini just doesn't want to come and is holding out for what he deems a better move for himself
I think with us not getting Borini he knows this is an option to play 2 forwards, but I don't think it's his prefered choice.
A lot of people say finding the right formula is more by accident than good management, think Gus will give this partnership a run out now
He wants Borini and I think he'll get him. He's a totally different player to either Wickham or Fletcher ........ I doubt either will clock up more then 30 games.
We cant play 4-4-2 we'd get hammered. The only way these two can be on the pitch from the start is if wickham plays from the left
Wickham played a lot of games from the right for Ipswich, indeed, when we signed him, Ipswich fans said it was his best position. To have the option of moving him up if we need a goal is decent, and he'll naturally look to press on and get shots in. It's not ideal, but it is a decent option.
Wickham played on the left for part of the game yesterday and looked strong and fast, he had one run in the second half which left a couple of Udinese players looking like they were running on sand.
He's deceptively quick Connor, I think with a lad his size they always look a bit cumbersome, but actually he isn't, at all.
This^ We'd actually look like a bunch of Kenyans struggling to run a marathon! Fletch's first season : 11 goals in 28, if he had a full season then might of bagged 15 for that season! I truly believe both of lads can contribute a hell of a lot to safc this season! Add into the mix Jozy with the backing from players and fans then who know's?
With Borini, if any of you lads are on facebook, the SAFC news and Banter page had a post earlier about Borini's missus not wanting to come up, as they got engaged blah blah. Anyways, in that, a bunch of asshats were royally ripping into her... only for her to already like the page, and being able to read it. SO she's posting in there, and people telling her to **** off, she's got a saggy box etc. If Borini was um'ing and ahh'ing, he prob wont be coming after reading some of those comments!
