Just reading PSG set to bid for Berbatov or Anelka this morning set me thinking.......

This wouldn't be PSG who we're set to give £7m to for their midfielder/striker? Clearly they are setting their sights higher than us......how? and why?

How buzzed would the fans be if we woke up reading facts like " TOON actually bid £20m for Berbatov"..........it would send out the right signals to one and all we were ambitious and hungry for success?

As it is, we're hampered by lack of European football ( possibly Enrique's reason to leave)and to be fair an international fan base , which makes us a hugely popular EPL club but not a huge club.....

For us to land truly proven talent is really difficult ......I think we're building blocks nicely..........these recent signings in past year prove we have a team for the future.......Nolan leaving was sad ( and we will miss his goals) but the guy was looking after No1......3 more years and an EXTRA £800k.......

My hope for next year is we finish top 6/7 and get into Europe.........as this will surely lead to more success......on and off the pitch.

Genuingly wouldn't want Berbatov. Class act but would clearly be here for the last big payday. Reminds me of Viduka (albeit a much better one)

Would rather get 2-3 players in for £20m then waste it all on Berbatov

As Kruller said, PSG have just had a ****load of Qatari money pumped in, like Malaga in Spain. Like Man City in England. Every country has this kind of team.

Hate the word 'big'. In the past, local fan-base was almost solely the measure of a football club. Now, however, two things are much more a measure of clubs size:

    1) International fan-base. World-wide support can ONLY be achieved by being successful in the big competitions (ie. Europe and the Premier League). Chelsea had no more fans than Wolves, Aberdeen or Ipswich a decade ago: now they vie with Arsenal and Liverpool as the second best-supported British club internationally. Success is self-promoting, does wonders for revenue, and steals support from other clubs.

    2) Money. GENEROUS billionaire benefactors make success possible, therefore building up a large international fan-base. Long-term success assures long-term support.

And you know, Newcastle United supporters are no different. If you conducted a survey of our fans which our favourite Spanish club is, it'd read something like: First, Barcelona, second Real Madrid, distant third Valencia. Same sort of results in every country. NUFC have very little international support because we don't win things.

We have the tightest owner in the world and they have money coming out their arse. They also have the lure of living in Paris and are probably the second biggest club in their country. You can't compare the two clubs really.

Thats the point i was making though. Man U are a massive club and they sold one of the worlds best players. We'd have to be more than just a big club if we want to keep every player we get

£20 million for Berbatov is exactly the sort of deal that I am gl;ad we are no longer doing: huge money on a fading talent who wouldn't want to be here and who is notoriously laz

As someone said, PSG should be a big club considering they're in one of the world's most famous cities, and now have the influx of money they've been lacking for a few years now.
Secondly, Newcastle United is famous around the world, but it's also been infamous for on and off the field drama for years now. A French player like Gameiro (for example) staying in France to play for what should be a club on the rise, or a fading player like Berba looking for a big paycheque and living in Paris hardly reflects poorly on NUFC.
Likewise, until players start picking Birmingham, Bolton, Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn, etc. over Newcastle, this is all a rather moot argument, I mean, I still believe it's in the top 6ish "biggest" English clubs worldwide, and nothing in the the transfer market is suggesting we don't pull that weight.

Money or no money, I really don't foresee Malaga drawing big names and making a run at Europe. I think clubs need to have some reputation or foundation of success to really capitalise on having an injection of money. But I guess we'll see

same with city - likes of tevez spring to mind, they werent in the champions league at that stage but when you offer big wages you can attract big players. Malaga will have to do something similar- pay way over the odds for players and hope success comes quickly.

Exactly, you need to prove you're willing to spend enough money to overhaul your entire squad, while being in a league and city that'll draw big gates and tv ratings.
On Sky this morning Michael Gray suggesting Man City would still be competing in 10-15 years, but I'll be shocked if they still have the financial back then, and I can't see their brand growing enough in the next few years to sustain their new-found "big club" status
