cahill 17mil england squad player or 10-12mil proven germany international Mertesacker

    Cahill actually.

If he goes to Chelsea we will all see that he's an excellent player.(he is also very keen to come to Arsenal)

I would prefer Neven Subotic or Matt Hummels if we were to sign anyone from the Bundesleaga,

Mertesacker is great in the air and reads the game well but is very very slow and may struggle in the prem.

That's absolute bollocks. John Terry is very slow, yet is one of the best Centrebacks in the league. Tony Adams was slow, so was Keown...I'm tired of reading this 'may struggle in Prem' crap.

he may be slow, but with a bit of work and fitness(arsenals program will be better) he will settle in nicely, and certainly worth the punt if cahill is valued at 17mil, i do like him but not for that price

Sorry to have a different opininon to you! Perhaps you could invent a new forum where you post a comment and reply to yourself.

Aww poor you. Did I hurt your feelings by saying that I think you're talking ****e? Perhaps you could invent a new forum where you spout meaningless phrases like 'may struggle in the Prem'.

Yeah but Mertesacker plays in a defence that has performed damn badly over the last 12 months in the German league.

Bremen conceded 61 goals last year!! - That's HORRIFIC by any standard.

Dortmund on the other hand have a superb defensive record despite playing very attacking football. They conceded 22 goals with Subotic and Hummels both being absolutely immense.

Whatever! Didn't hurt my feelings just thought you were ranting like an idiot because someone posted an opinion. You seem like a bit of a knob.

Mertesacker has hardly had a decent game for two years, Cahill is proven Premier League quality and would be a great signing for Arsenal

I'm not impressed with Mertesacker .. he seems far too slow. Its one thing looking slow in a slower paced league, how bad will he be in a league as fast as ours ???

In this instance I'd go for Cahill if it were between the 2.

A better option is Samba - got that determination of Cahill and speed .. and considerably more experience - costs less than both too. A tall, big, fast, powerful brute !! Exactly what we need.

A little intelligence thrown into the mix would be a good thing too. Especially if a defender is to react fast enough so as to not jeapordise our high-line game. I'm not sure Samba will slot into our style of play so readily.

Sirt - but thats the problem, we don't have defenders who a) know how to defend or b) like defending. Forget the pretty defending, I want a defender who will put the ball into row Z when needed.

When we had a great defence we had a no nonsense defender - Adams, Bould, Keown, Campbell. Since we lost Campbell the first time round our defence has been pants. this is the English league, its too physical for arty farty defenders. where have our cultured classy defenders got us ? Every successful team has at least one true defender in the centre .....

I hear what you're saying, but if we have to forget our fast counter game then we really are fooked. We need a defender that can cope with both styles & I fear Samba can only manage one.

We need a savy CB, not a lump. Adams and Keown were slow, but read the game brilliantly. But as much as it pains me to say it, I think they would both struggle if they were playing against the level the Premier league is these days. In their day they were great, but the skill level has moved on and defenders these days need to be quick, agile, strong and intelligent.

Samba doesn't cut it for me. I'm not saying he wouldn't be useful, but if we're going to splash £10m + on a CB then I really think we should be going for Subotic

is it right that no team has won the Premier League without a British CB?

10m+ on subotic are you having a laugh he will be valued at near on 20m i think and at that price do you think we could afford that and have enough to buy a striker.
the reason i picked mertesacker is that his price is about right, even though he dont have speed that is not everything

I would personally go with Samba or Cahill - both are proven premiership players and neither of them would take time to settle and adjust to 1. life in england and 2. life in the premier league like some of the other players mentioned in this thread. Plus both have stated that they would be interested in a move to Arsenal if we made a firm bid.

Also i'm not of the opinion that to be a top premier league defender that you need to have pace. You only have to look at players like Terry, Carragher and further back the likes of Adams, Keown and dare i say it... Neville :/... none of these guys is or was blessed with great pace but they still are or were regarded are excellent defenders and this was largely due to their ability to read the game and be commanding whenever they were called upon!

It's been a problem area for years now. I can't understand why Wenger won't put an end to it..... Well, I can but wish he would just spend the 20 million on Subotic. It's not selling out your philosophy to spend big now & then. It's for a good cause <ok>
