Each season we stay in the PL the more expensive it becomes in salaries etc. We have to increase revenue streams which also means we have to invest in the infrastructure. Category 1 status was a must as is expansion of the stadium. These are the priorities if we want to grow as a club which we need to do to stay in the PL. I don't pretend to know the inner workings or financials of our club but I reckon it's a tough balancing act between on field playing staff and facilities. Whether we as fans like it or not we are in the bottom 3 of the PL in size and fan Base. So the longer we stay in the harder it is without growth. I said on a previous thread a player that cost £10 million 2 seasons ago would now cost double.
So the gap between our spending each season is getting larger compared to our income which is unsustainable. Like it or not the scales will continue to tip against us without more revenue. We just have to grin and bear it cos sure as eggs is eggs it doesn't matter who is at the helm the problem remains.

But that post makes it sound as if we should simply accept the inevitable. We'll never keep up and may as well resign ourselves to the fact we will be relegated at some point. Is that truly what we've become?

But surely by that logic every other club will have to compete in that process, with less time in the league and surely less revenue, like Watford, Bournemouth, but they have managed to do ok this summer.

I was very disappointed that Eder failed to find a home here at Swansea.

There's something undeniably magical about footballers with four letter names, viz, Pele, Zico, Nani, Didi, Vava, Raul, Gower, ( O.K. I know that's five letters, but it's my post, poetic licence, etc.), and last but not least, our very own Taff. <laugh>

So, how could he fail ? Hmmm, good question.

I wish him all the luck in the world.

Why are we saying that the investment in the training facilities etc has caused this financial loss? I thought the entire £25m fee for Bony covered this cost?

We have sold enough players at a profit to cover everything we have done and more. The truth is Jenkins has acquired some of the most inept players that have been on very good wages and never paid their way plus the board including Jenkins have creamed off a good whack for themselves over the years and as soon as we have a bad season like last season then our financial side of things will be effected.....Wages is a huge factor as well especially paying top wages and long contracts to useless Jenkins signings that end up on the bench.

I understand that The Swans' paid out just over 80% of their revenue in wages last season. The highest in the P.L.

That is quite scandalous and unsustainable, and any Club who gets in financial difficulties due to such profligacy, deserves all it gets.

It's the P.L., and it's oh so easy to get caught up in the money mayhem. That's why I detest it so.

Totally agree with you, it may be the biggest league money wise, but I have fallen out love for watching it. The money is just obscene!!

I can see the direct benefits of having a category 1 youth development facilities but it should be done in stages for sustainable reasons. We coped with not having any facilities and that was successful for both 1st team and development (Allen & Davies) the biggest revenue streams come through being in the premier league (tv money and sponsorship deals) if we loose that then it's going to be hard to keep these facilities going if we don't gain promotion within the first couple of years.

Also the price of players inflate with the increase of tv money and sponsorship so it's all relative. Therfore, first and foremost increasing our chances of staying in this league should be the number one priority. But IMO the priority of the board was to create an attractive investment to gain as much profit as they can. As TLF stated,

There is a saying that buying cheap will cost you more in the long run and it's always better to buy quality that works out cheaper in the end...

Bournemouth have a multi millionaire owner who has already loaned the club over 50 mill and they have been fined under ffp. They also spent the same as us on transfers.
That aside the point I was making was the likes of us bournemouth and watford will always struggle longterm with spending unless we increase our commercial revenue, or unless we have a big financial backer that's the reality. The extra money for staying in the league doesn't strengthen our position as the other 19 clubs get the same. I don't see this as a depressing thought it is just the way it is.
It is very easy for us to be sat at home and criticise when not knowing the facts. None on here as far as I know have ever been involved in runnning a football club and as are as I can see we have managed to retain our PL status for 5 years so the board must be doing something right.
I am sure some will say survival isn't what we should be aiming for but the reality is for a club our size that is the reality (in my humble opinion of course) and I am happy with that. It's the old small fish big pond scenario and we are the tiddlers

I am not saying we should have gone mental in the transfer market, but we certainly must have been able to go a little further than we did. Not to replace Ash, with experience was utter madness and will IMO be our downfall.

The one thing I really don't get is to be out spent by the 3 sides coming up, surely after 5 seasons we should be able to at least compete with them.

Is this right that we are in the bottom 3 in terms of fan base, or do you mean in terms of ground capacity ?

The article in WOL a few days ago said clubs coming up under financial fair play are better off in the transfer market than clubs like Swansea , West Brom etc. Don't ask me to explain it because I don't understand it.
