"Middens" a truly great word, very descriptive. Don't hear it very often.

 

I'm watching Time Team and they use the word "midden" all the time.

" Scottish" word. Yes you're correct - it means a bin or bin area usually but is also used to describe a person e.g. "get yirsel tae **** ya clatty midden".

 

It's an archaeological term for a pit or suchlike where people used to dump their waste, mostly things like bones and shells.

 

I know what it means in archaeology thanks. I'm refering to its origin as it appears to have a different meaning and be in common use north of the border.

 

In Glasgow, where I grew up, it's a generic term meaning any of the following:

Waste Bins, The Shelter which covers the waste bins, an untidy home, a woman of loose morals, a filthy person. And more besides.

 

Okay, in modern context it's much like wino says. It's an oft used phrase by parents to their kid on the state of their bedroom: "Look at the state of this place, it's like a midden in here"

 

Another example - " Their hoose is like a ****ing midden,so it is."

 

It's best used with "Clatty" as a prefix I feel.

 

Or - " I pulled a right slag last night, her fanny smelled like a midden"

Yes "Clarty " is very English. I don't think I've ever heard anyone up here saying it.

It's clarty through here. I think people oop North (as in Newcastle etc.) use clarty too.

 

My favourite Scots word is "breenge".

 

"Ah jist breenged right in there,so ah did"

 

Someone who breenges rushes recklessly: "Ye've got tae make an appointment. Ye canny just breenge in an see them."
A breenge is an example of doing this. "Now I don't want a mad breenge for the door when the bell goes."
Someone who behaves impetuously may be called a breenger.
