Also teams could design their cars around shorter and longer runs based on what tyres they choose. You could get a RB preferring 3 stops on ultras, a Ferrari 2 stopping on SS and a Merc 1 stopping using the soft.
The teams should also be able to keep it a secret until the weekend of a race as well, so adds the element of surprise in so others can't plan in advance what to do.
Remember the Goodyear/Pirelli and Bridgestone/Michelin days when there were clear discrepencies in performance which made for bad racing. Main reason being a manufacturer built their tyres around one of the top teams and the rest of the field had to make do.
I just worry you would end up with a Ferrari Situation with a ckearctyre advantage designed solely around them.
Yep, Not sure how you can legislate against that. The manufacturers will want to win so will always try and make a tyre suit the team that is more likely to win. Ferrari/Merc dominance would just get worse.
Don't know if this video will work for non-Facebook types, but I'm putting it up anyway because it's ace.

A superb lap. As always with Bathurst, it is virtually impossible to get a 'perfect lap' – much as is the case with the old Nordschleife. 98-99% perfect on virtually every corner is extremely satisfying but I wonder if he's kicking himself for not quite acing that left-hander near the end of the lap? It was a real stunner though. 10 out of 10.
I think he was probably trying to not throw away the lap, he probably couldn’t believe he got away with in coming over the top. Not many days when you get to see 2 laps of extreme excellence - this and Hameltons
Yep. I could not agree more. Knowing he had it in the bag, he quite rightly played it safe on the last three corners, especially the final left. Over the top he was scintillating, and, as you say, he must have known he was about as close to being 'over the edge' as is humanly possible! Superb. Thanks for posting it. P.S. I should add I also agree about Hamilton's lap. Suzuka is another circuit where perfection is elusive but that was about as close as I've ever seen here.
watched McLaren last night, excellent film about the life of Bruce McLaren, I think it's the first time I've ever heard his voice. Some great little bits in it, I especially liked the way they tested down-force levels back in the 60's.
It was only released this may, though I'd never heard of it either, came across mention of it when I was looking at imdb, then dl'd it from yify. It's very interesting to find out how they did what they did when there was no money n F1
