root isn't buttler/stokes. he cannot score quick enough. that one run out has just ended england hope as 100/1 was on target. to throw the next one in the bin like that just amps up the pressure. The run rate is 3.76 now. they were never scoring enough and its only getting worse. I can see another final hour agony with anderson trying to block.
Root Bairstow Moeen Woakes can all easily bat at 4/5 an over if they need to. If England wanted to they could send Bairstow in next if there’s 100 left with 20 overs and 7 wickets in hand for example.
Don’t forget the last 25 overs or so will be with the new ball so will come off the bat nicely as well.
what an absolute **** show. We elected to bowl day 1 and it looked the right call for the bowlers we had but at the time it was seriously questioned as this pitch was always one you don't look up at the clouds day 1 and make such a call. Right now the pitch looked to have faded and is a good day 5 track, not terrible not brilliant but england as per just can't cope. India got the best out of that pitch and utterly knackered our lot. the usual england flaky batting but the guys who have pretty average scores Good opening but since its a **** show. Pope bought himself a bye in the first innings. bairstow and alli prove themselves white ball batters again. Alli is ridiculous. England victory was lost yesterday. Then all the hard work by the openers was thrown away so that any hope of a draw draw was turned into an easy win for india.
the team has no "character" the odi and t20 teams have this big scoring mentality allied with a desire to field hard and bowl mean in a certain way. they go out and start quick and tay quick and score heavily as the game is set up for limited overs players to do so. Our test side has no style or consistent design. random bowlers half the time, odi specialists in the middle order and scratching round trying to din players who might be ok with the bat in the top order. We ned to find a way of playing, be it socring at a clip, or being aggressive in knocking singles and forcing teams to react. either be a busy batting side who puts bowlers under some pressure within the limitations of test cricket or be dour slow scoring and hard to get out. Hameed again went out did really well on day 4 then comes back in for day 5 and is within himself. like someone got in his ear and told him to slow up. He at least looks like a test batsman even if his development has been terribly slow and only half done by the country scene. Pope is ok once, malan did ok a couple times. Root is a genuine test batsman. Burns is not. Baristow is a forgive me but why are you even considered near the upper order. Hes a 7 at best. Not quite sure why he is in the side at all given buttler keeps. Which then brings up buttler, the most valuable limited overs player in the world and one who is simply not up to test match batting. drop him down the order and let him swing away imo. He's not that good when the ball can go anywhere. then the bowling lol. can't make our minds up can we. We have done well to get robinson in. he's gone quite well but its all about accuracy. not much pace, not much swing. we need quicks and better spin and simply don't back who we do have a lot of the time and drag them out of the cupboard to go off on tour with zero practice and then critique the **** out of them once they fail the first day to take 5 wickets.
team for the next game is now announced again. England squad: Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood. tragic squad Burns - has done better with hameed smee to like running the singles Hameed - Starts well but goes negative. needs to get this out of his game Malan - done "ok" but not brilliant. Root - one average test after many marvellous ones but captaincy needs positivity. Pope - mixed. Bairstow- terrible batting - Does he get dropped?? Buttler - has been poor with bat. 8. ? 9. ? Robinson - has done really well in england, big tests in the future but solid for this test Anderson - one innings man now?? the issues here are fairly stark. woakes and overton did ok, good accuracy and applied pressure but fell away and we are headed for old trafford. I would possibly do the following: a) Drop bairstow given his lack of runs. He will be a specialist batsman here and 20-30 isn't enough. b) put woakes in as no 7. thats your seamer right there. Promote buttler to 6 and be done with it. c) Put alli in no 8. he can score but the instruction has to be get 30 not score big so he might as well just have at it and hope. d) put leech as no 9. You've brought him in. use him or don't bother. e) have to think about wood here. faster pace is at least something different, but i'm out of spaces so anderson is the only one and i can't remove him for old trafford can i? I look at that 1 to 6 and think flaky with the bat. I look at them and think not great fielding either. so i've no confidence in it. I look at anderson and am only putting him in due to pressure and maybe for 10 overs in a day he will threaten. This then puts huge pressure on the two spinners and robinson and woakes to bowl for a long time. Add in a bit of root spin too. thats 6 possible bowling options and 3 are spin, purely on the basis of it is old trafford. I still think wood would have a big shout here.
it looks like the word is out that its Bairstow or pope getting the knife. Alli confirmed, buttler confirmed. Root trying to pretend old trafford might not spin so theres a liny bit of doubt whether its leech or whoever a bowling option.
Leach should play. Turns at OT and having left arm spinner who can use that rough to both left and right handers will be invaluable. Saw India take advantage of it last test.
